Hello Pulpit Rock family,

I want to remind us all that as Christ followers we are people of faith and love, not people of fear.

We want to be always gracious in the face of fear, but we follow the sovereign God of peace. And I want to first and foremost encourage us that he has not changed… and he will not. He is in control and we can trust him with our life and our health.

That being said – for us humans, a lot can change in 48 hours! Obviously, the ongoing strategy for public health in light of COVID-19 has evolved significantly yesterday and today. We are in uncharted territory, and we are doing our best to listen to state officials and follow their lead.

Governor Polis hosted a conference call this afternoon with Church leaders across the state. In his address he said the following few things that we want to act on at Pulpit Rock.

We are recommending that you do not meet in gatherings larger than 250 unless adequate social distancing can be maintained.

In light of that recommendation and a few others here is what we are planning for our worship services:

  • If you are over 70, have any ongoing health concern, or are in any way sick, we are asking that you stay home.

  • If you are in any way nervous about public gatherings, please stay home.

  • We are working on a way to live stream our services this Sunday, or at the very least we will post them quickly after they end.

  • At our services, we are reconfiguring our chairs so that there will be an appropriate amount of “social distance.” We will also avoid handshakes.

  • We will not have our ministry programs for nursery, preschool, elementary, 56, 78 or High School (including Wednesday night PRiSM programs).

  • We are also asking our classes not to meet and we are canceling our Mini-Marriage Conference.

  • Also the Boquillas carwash is cancelled – and the Boquillas Mission trip will be canceled (or adjusted significantly – the team is still talking).

Basically, we are just having a modified version of our worship services. So just assume that all of our extra-curricular groups are cancelled this week unless you hear otherwise.

Typically our services are in the 300-400 person range. We expect them to be much smaller this weekend, but we are confident that if a few of us would still like to gather it can be done safely. And we hope the rest of you will join us online.

The text bulletin will have the latest – including (hopefully) a link for streaming. Text ‘PULPITROCK’ to 77948 for the latest updates, watch sermons, listen to our podcast, find all sorts of wonderful and free content from RightNow Media.

He also said: We are asking faith communities to help meet needs in our communities. He specifically mentioned: Childcare, Groceries and Financial assistance.

CHILDCARE:

We understand that many of you may have some challenges due to the cancellation of school this next week. The Governor asked that faith communities would consider helping with this.

So if you have school age children who are unable to care for themselves at home and you do not have work flexibility, we would love to hear from you. Will you please email us the specific need and your children’s ages? Email Suzy at sbates@pulpitrock.com. We aren’t sure if we can meet this need – but we’d love to at least hear from you so we can explore it.

GROCERIES:

If you are over the age of 70 – the state is recommending that if it is possible you stay away from places like grocery stores. We would love to help you. If you are running low on any ESSENTIAL supplies or groceries, and you are over 70 will you please email Luke at lwrobleski@pulpitrock.com.

We will do our best to help you get what you need.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

Many people will experience severe financial impact from the cancellations and quarantines. We are here to help and to support our neighbors.

If you would like to give to help those in need, giving to our general fund helps. And we are currently working to set aside funds for our community. You can give here or email Adria for more information at arobinson@pulpitrock.com.

If your job has been impacted, and you experience financial hardship in the next month or months – please also reach out to Adria. We have systems in place where we can work with you to help.

The Governor will be hosting another conference call with faith leaders next Thursday and we will update our plan after that. We will be watching every day, but I expect that our plan will be modified on a week by week basis.

Let’s continue to pray for this. Please pray with me.

  • I’m praying for our older population and those with already compromised health.
  • I’m praying for our international friends who don’t have access to the best healthcare.
  • I’m praying against the culture of fear in our country.
  • And I’m praying for our church to BE the church in these days, and in all days.

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91 – NIV)

I love you people!
Jonathan
