Whether you are looking for a seat on a restaurant terrace or a place to put your beach towel, summer is always high season in Provence. Many of the regular summer festivals are returning this year, with the necessary restrictions. Please look at our list of seasonal activities and festivals here.
Often the first part of June is cool. Then like a light switch, the temperature jumps and the cicadas emerge from their underground slumber marking time with their chanting. Long daylight hours encourage the lavender and sunflowers to bloom while the poppies fade for another year. Speculation builds around when the lavender flowers will peak and the best fields in the region.
Photographers and painters will confirm that the omnipresent summer sun pushes you to the search for the shadows. Artists Miriam Hartmann and Tessa Baker both like to paint outside (en plein air), which is not always easy in Provence as nature’s dance marks life in the region.
Summer is (or should be) the time when you do not need to ask for permission to take a nap in the shade. Perhaps with that in mind, Christopher and Laurent of OohProvence curated our summer menu. They chose a selection of small plates to enjoy with friends al fresco with chilled rosé.
