Summer Fun Series- Science Week!

Every day this week I'll be bringing you ideas for creating fun summer memories with your family. Each day's activities can span a wide range of ages and are divided into morning, afternoon and evening sections. Spend as much or as little time on each as you want. Some activities will require no oversight, and some are designed for full family involvement, but all are meant to be easy and low stess- so have fun!

Let's Explore Science!

There's so much to explore in our world, textbooks can't do God's creation justice! This week we'll see where science and religion meet and learn lots of cool stuff in the process!

Monday

Morning- What is biology? Meet Father Gregor Mendel and genetics.
Afternoon - Do an experiment about genes (or older kids can study DNA ). Then learn about the parts of cells, or build an animal cell out of candy. **Little children may enjoy The Peaceful Preschool Garden Guide by Jennifer Pepito.
Evening - Dissection (virtual or online) - take apart a flower, owl pellet, or worm.

Tuesday

Morning - What is earth science? Meet volcanist Giuseppe Mercalli.
Afternoon - Build a volcano or experiment with earthquakes, or collect and study rocks from around your yard or neighborhood.
Evening - Learn about the weather. Make a weather station, and sit outside and look at the clouds.

Wednesday

Morning - .What is astronomy? Meet Fr. Georges Lemaitre, and explore the Vatican observatory.
Afternoon - Pretend you're on the International Space Station and look at Earth from space using Google Earth. Learn how to become an astronaut. **Complete some activities from the Printable Kids Activity Book Mini Bundle, space unit, by Corinne Schmitt.
Evening - What else is in the night sky besides stars? Listen to Gustav Holst's The Planets as you learn about our solar system, comets, meteorites, and look at Hubble Telescope images.

Thursday

Morning- .What is chemistry? Meet Louis Pasteur. (This is one of our family's favorite read aloud books/ series.)
Afternoon - Explore atoms and elements and try to identify what elements make up everyday items around your home and backyard.
Evening - Explore kitchen science and make some treats to enjoy!

Friday- Science Fair

What type of science did you enjoy most? Do an experiment and create a science project to present to your family. Kids can work independently or pick one project to team up on. Bonus cocktail (admittedly complex, but very cool)!
