A Message from the Dean

Dear ,

Over the last few weeks I have been reflecting on 2 Corinthians 4:7-18. As we anticipate a second National Lockdown coming into force tomorrow, this passage gives us a timely a reminder to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." Paul shares an encouragement "do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

As a nation we are weary and fatigued. Our jars of clay are worn down, chipped and cracked. "But" Paul says, "we have this treasure within". The light that shines in the darkness dwells within us. The Power of Jesus Christ is sat in your chair. If we focus on the clay, it is easy to miss out on the glory contained within.

The Archbishops and Bishop of London, in a letter sent to clergy, have called for the Church of England to make this month of lockdown a month of prayer. To turn again to our faithful God whose steadfast love endures forever. Jesus is never more visible in us than when people can find no other reason for the hope we have.

I know that this second Lockdown will be harder than the first for many people for a number of reasons, but my prayer is that we can focus anew on the treasure, not the clay, and be beacons of light in a season of darkness.

Please see below for notices from the college, including an update and important information about teaching week and plans for Epiphany term teaching.

God Bless

Russell

I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff team who have been working incredibly hard as we continue to navigate the changing landscape in this season. As I'm sure many of you will be familiar with from your own contexts, they have made and re-made plans countless times over the last few months.  They have put together programmes for delivery and input only to have to start from scratch as new guidance is issued. We have been through multiple iterations of planning and detailed logistical arrangements for different scenarios to enable various forms of in-person gatherings. We are mindful of our moral and ethical duty to ensure the safety not only of staff and students but also our wider communities.

Be assured that we do not take decisions lightly and we will continue to work towards enabling in-person gatherings, locally and nationally, as soon as it is safe and feasible to do so. We are particularly keen that those students who have not yet had the opportunity to meet in person locally are able to do so as soon as is practically possible.

Epiphany Term Delivery Update

Following staff and student feedback and consultations, we have now finalised our plans for delivery of academic teaching in Epiphany (spring) term. As ever, all arrangements are subject to evolving guidelines. The criteria used to determine whether academic content may be delivered in-person are available on the Covid-19 FAQs section of the college website.

More detailed information about the planned delivery of Epiphany Term teaching is available on moodle in the handbook under Learning and Teaching or via the button below. Please read the document carefully Timetables will be available by mid-December.

Below is an overview of some of the headline decisions and actions.

  • Delivery mode for teaching: Whilst we will ensure online delivery of teaching is available throughout the term, we are setting the foundations for a return to face-to-face teaching when it is possible. This will likely vary by centre and depend on any regional or venue restrictions.
  • Lecture timings & Preparation: Teaching timetables are being amended to enable more time in lectures for discussion as well as time for a break from Zoom. Please read the document for these changes.
    • In order to do this, preparatory reading and preparatory work for lectures will be combined into one item of preparation. For full-time students, while there will be time set aside to review preparatory work after morning worship, this change will mean you will need to set aside time ahead of each of your teaching days to complete preparatory work for your lectures.
    • We will also be reintroducing Thursday evening teaching for Chelmsford centre students.

Reporting Covid-19 Cases

As a higher education institution, we are required by the government to report the number of positive coronavirus cases within the college community on a regular basis.

If you receive a positive test result for Covid-19 please therefore inform tilly.bacon@stmellitus.ac.uk and copy your formation group tutor.

If your symptoms mean that you are unable to attend any college teaching or input, please also ensure you submit an absence request form (found on moodle) in the usual way.
