Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
The White House’s Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (OIA), the Domestic Policy Council (DPC), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the White House Council on Native American Affairs (WHCNAA) have announced a Tribal consultation on Sec. 4(a) of Executive Order 14112, “Reforming Federal Funding and Support for Tribal Nations to Better Embrace our Trust Responsibilities and Promote the Next Era of Tribal Self-Determination.” Specifically, Sec. 4(a) directs the Director of OMB and the Domestic Policy Advisor to consult with each WHCNAA member agency head and Tribal Nations to, “develop guidance for assessing the additional funding each agency needs for its existing [federal] funding and support programs for Tribal Nations…” The upcoming consultation seeks Tribal Nation input on guidance for federal agencies to assess funding shortfalls and priorities for Tribal programs and services.
Details regarding the upcoming Tribal consultation are as follows—
On January 22, 2024, USET SPF sent an Alert announcing a White House Tribal Engagement Session on EO 14112 and provided talking points for use by our member Tribal Nations. In preparation for the upcoming July 8th
Tribal consultation, USET SPF will send a follow-up Alert and provide additional talking points for our Tribal Leaders. In addition, USET SPF also sent a letter to WHCNAA on April 8, 2024 proclaiming support for EO 14112 while also providing specific recommendations for implementation of the Executive Order.
