Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Word Resurrects
the Dead”
Aim:
Explore Mary’s and
Martha’s faith relationships with Jesus;
Embrace
with
the confident expectation that Jesus has the power of God to save,
heal, and raise people from the dead;
and Exchange
with
Jesus honsestly and faithfully, even when faced with impossible
situations.
Background:
John 11:17-44
Bible
Lesson:
John
11:17-27,
38-44
“Jesus
said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth
in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth
and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John
11:25-26 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John. John was one of Jesus
twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred to as “the
disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross for the sins
of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly mother” to
John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of disciples,
Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount of
Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Gospel
According to John differs from the Synoptic Gospels (According to
Matthew, to Mark, and to Luke), in that it deals in great detail
with many doctrinal matters and facts. Today’s lesson shows that
Jesus has power over
life and death.
It is clear that Jesus is
the Messiah, the Son God, the “Annointed One of God” and being
the Second Person of the God Head has
Unlimited Power!
- John
11:17-20,
Jesus
Is In Control: Our
study begins with Jesus arriving in Bethany, a town less than 2
miles from Jerusalem. Jesus is told that his dear friend, Lazarus,
with whom he had spent many restful hours along with his sisters,
Mary and Martha, had been dead for four days and was buried in a
grave. Jesus had been informed
earlier that his friend Lazarus was ill and to come see about him.
But Jesus did not come immediately, instead he delayed in
coming and
told the disciples that
Lazarus
was not sick unto death but for
the Glory of God. (“When
Jesus heard [that], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but
for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified
thereby.” John 11:4 KJV)
As
was the tradition of the day, many had come to mourn and to console
Mary and Martha in
the
death of their brother. As soon as Martha, who is
presumed to be the
older,
heard of Jesus’ arrival, she immediately went to meet him.
- John
11:21-24,
Jesus
Is Always Right on Time:
Martha’s initial
remarks
to Jesus were
that if only
you had been here, Lazarus would not have died. In other words,
“Jesus you had the power to heal his illness.” But even though
he is dead, Martha stated
that she was confident that God would grant Jesus whatever he asked.
This seems to imply that she believed that Jesus could ask God to
bring life back to her brother. Jesus’ reply was that Lazarus will
rise again. His statement
clearly implies that he is not too late for Lazarus. Martha’s
interpretaion of Jesus’ statement was that in the later day, when
all the dead in Christ are
raised, Lazarus will
be among them. This reflected her belief in the Resurrection as
taught by Jesus. It also seemed to indicate she was hoping that
Jesus would ask God to bring her brother back to life now rather
than later.
-
John
11:25-27,
Jesus
Is the Resurrection and the Life:
Jesus
plainly states that He is the Resurrection and Life and that if one
believes in him, though he be dead, he will live again. He further
states that those who believe in Him will never die. In other
words, the Messiah has power over death and life. Jesus
asked Martha the question that we all must answer, “Do you
believe?” Martha answered,
Yes, I believe and
have always believed that
you are the Messiah, the Son of God who
was sent
into
the world from
God.
-
John
11:38-44,
Jesus Is
Lord over Death:
When
Jesus
arrived at Lazarus’ tomb, his humanity was still affected by the
death of Lazarus. The tomb was a cave with a stone sealing its
entrance. Jesus commanded that the stone be rolled away. Martha
protested because her brother had been dead for four days, meaning
that his body had begun to decay and would stink. Jesus reminded
her that she would see God’s Glory if she believed. They
rolled the stone away. Jesus looked up to heaven and
prayed “Father,
thank you for hearing me. But you always hear me, I say this for the
sake of those standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.”
Jesus said with a loud voice “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus came
out still wrapped in grave clothes and with his face wrapped with a
napkin. Jesus directed
“Unwrap him and let him go!” It must be noted (1)
the
stone had to be rolled away for Lazarus’ tomb; (2)
it
took Jesus to raise Lazarus from the dead; (3)
others
had to remove Lazarus’ grave clothes and the napkin from his face;
and (4)
that Lazarus would have another appointment with death in the
future. Those
who are part of the Resurrection in the later day will never die
again and their souls will reunite with Glorified Bodies. In
contrast, when Jesus rose from the dead; (1)
he rose from a borrowed tomb; (2) no
one had to roll away the stone from the
tomb;
(3)
no
one had to remove Jesus’ grave clothes he simply
passed through them leaving them behind; and (4)
Jesus
folded and placed the napkin from face aside indicating there was no
haste in His resurrection. All
Glory be to God!
Take
Aways:
- There
is nothing
is impossible with God!
- God
is control of
both
life and death
- Faith
in God and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is
necessary for Eternal Life
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“And,
behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her
old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
For with God nothing shall be impossible.” Luke
1:36-37 KJV
“And
again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye
of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
When his disciples heard [it], they were exceedingly amazed, saying,
Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld [them], and said unto them,
With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew
19:24-26 KJV
“For
my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways,
saith the LORD. For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so
are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your
thoughts.” Isaiah
55:8-9 KJV
“And
as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the
judgment:” Hebrews
9:27 KJV
“For
the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the
voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in
Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive [and] remain shall
be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in
the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians
4:16-17 KJV
“Behold,
I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be
changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump:
for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put
on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality. So when
this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal
shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the
saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1
Corinthians
15:51-54 KJV
