Plant Based Health Professionals write open letter to UK government

On World Nutrition Day in May more than 200 NHS doctors and other health professionals wrote an open letter to NHS leaders and the UK Government urging them to make radical changes to the current unsustainable and unhealthy food system. The letter received considerable attention on social media and was also published in The Metro.

The letter was written by Plant Based Health Professionals. It proposes changes such as the banning of subsidies and introduction of taxes for junk food, soft drinks and animal farming; banning of advertising which increases the consumption of unhealthy foods and importantly the introduction of subsidies to move towards a predominantly whole food plant based diet in order to improve human and planetary health.

Video: In conversation with Prof Lorna Harries and her accurate COVID-19 tests

Professor Lorna Harries of the University of Exeter, and Carla Owen, CEO of Animal Free Research UK (AFR), recently discussed the Animal Free Research UK funded COVID-19 project that Professor Lorna is leading (1 hour). Lorna and her team are optimising a test that will not only detect the COVID-19 virus but will also provide an accurate count of its viral load, meaning clinical risk can be predicted and infection status monitored.

AFR says "This is a fantastic opportunity for you to hear the latest developments and discoveries in human relevant research direct from our scientists and researchers who are all paving the way for the new approach to testing and research that we all want – a kinder science."

Tips for managing unwanted animal guests in the home (from Animal Aid)

Sometimes birds, rats, mice and other animals move into our homes uninvited. Moles, grey squirrels and foxes may change our gardens and outdoor spaces. It can be quite easy to deter some of these visitors. Animal Aid has a list of advice sheets for humane ways to deter wildlife from our homes. They also have a report Alternatives to Culling with further information.
