Highlands Happenings
Holy Trinity Sunday

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity does not demand our understanding and intellectual consent. Instead it invites us to lean more deeply into the mystery that is God.

Church doctrines need not by dry and boring statements of faith that are used as a litmus test to divide fact & fiction. Like Scriptures, Church doctrines are not intended to reduce God. Doctrines can instead be used the same way we would use a beautiful icon or a piece of artwork - to expand our appreciation and deepen our contemplation of God.

On Sunday we will be discussing Lady Wisdom, and the side of God that she reveals. (Proverbs 8.1-4, 22-31.)

Fr. Richard Rohr - Group Conversation- Friday, June 14th, 5:30

We will be gathering at Martin & Wanda Brotherton's home for dinner and discussion of a couple talks given by Fr. Richard Rohr at our recent Synod Assembly. You can watch the first talk by clicking on the image above. Here is a link to his second. And here is his third.

As a tease, one of my favorite quotes from his talks was:

"If you don't transform your pain, you will transmit it."

If you're interested in coming email Pastor Asher at pastorasherocallaghan@gmail.com and he can give you the Brotherton's address and directions there if you need them.

This gathering is put together by Bookies. We are a group of folks from church who meet once a month at one another’s homes to discuss a book, play games, or watch a movie. All are welcome to come every month, every once in a while, or once in a blue moon.

It's our tradition here at Highlands to have a kid-centered worship every time there's a 5th Sunday in the month. On this Sunday in June, we will be talking about what baptism means for our lives. And then we'll be remembering and celebrating baptism by playing with water after worship outside on the church lawn.

Lunch will be provided for everyone! There will be grilled hot dogs, either veggie dogs or burgers, chips, and drinks.

We'll have a slip n' slide and a water game for younger kids too.

What to bring: Sunscreen, bathing suit or water-friendly clothes (you can wear these for worship). Spare change for our "Noisy Offering" - during the offering part of worship, the kids will walk around the sanctuary with big tin cans so that it'll make plenty of noise when you put in your change.

Sunday, July 14th, 10am, Pferdestellar Park

It is what it sounds like! We worship outside at the park and eat a picnic lunch together afterwards.

Sandwiches & fixins will be provided. Sign-up here to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share!

Bring along yard chairs or blankets to sit on (there's minimal seating at picnic tables there). Also bring frisbees, footballs, bocce ball, or any favorite yard games you'd like to play after worship!

Pferdestellar Park can be found between Wolff & Yates on 33rd.

Building Brick By Brick: Above & Beyond

So Far, We've Raised $4,568! This includes $3,000 to purchase, move, and tune our new gorgeous used baby grand piano. And $155 given to cover any of these projects. Thanks to everyone who has given so far!

We are still looking to raise the following:

+New Sanctuary Sound System: $14,039 ($961 raised so far)

+Renovation of Northwest Basement Bathroom: $3,722 ($313 raised so far)

+Renovation of Northeast Basement Bathroom: $2,636 ($139 raised so far)

What's all this about?
Our "Walls of Giving" in the narthex have lots and lots of envelopes (bricks - designed by the Sunday School kids), each with a different amount of money on them and a sticker indicating which project the money will go towards.

This year, for "Above & Beyond" (giving that's in addition to any regular pledging to Highlands you may do) we're focusing on a couple projects that will help keep our facilities in good shape.

Giving is simple - Just pick a project that you'd like to give to, and take an envelope from the wall with that project's sticker. Fill the envelope with a check (write the project name on your check) or cash in the amount listed on the front. Put the envelope in an offering plate or the bin by the walls. And repeat as often as you're able!
