As if by magic, January is here and we can finally put 2020 behind us. Happy New Year to you all! While we at Cleveland Pools have enjoyed the festive break, we’re back on the case now: bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and raring to go, despite the recent lockdown news.
This month we meet one of our valued patrons, share with you the latest winners of our Pool Tile Design Competition and reveal the much anticipated launch date for our new branding. Do please read on….
Our people
This month we’d like to introduce June Hannam, one of our patrons who’s also led a team of volunteers as part of our interpretation team.
When we asked June why she decided to become a patron, this is what she said:
“As a resident of Bath for many years and a recently retired professor of History from the University of the West of England I was delighted to be asked to become a patron of the Pools in 2017. I was excited by a project that highlighted a unique aspect of Bath’s history and also aimed to provide a leisure activity for residents and visitors to enjoy today. Since retirement I have been involved in promoting local history through the Larkhall History Society, the Women’s History Network and the Bath Museum of Work so the Pools were a perfect fit.
During the April lockdown I was asked to coordinate a small team of volunteers to write the content for four history panels to be located in the Ladies Pool. I was very pleased to have the chance to put my professional expertise to practical use. It was quite a challenge to produce something accessible and readable but we all had a great sense of achievement when the task was finally completed.
When I first came to Bath in the 1970s I swam in the Pools and like everyone else remember how cold it was. I’m now looking forward to taking my grandchildren to enjoy open air swimming once again in the city.”
Tile Design Competition Winners
Last year we launched a competition to find budding young artists to design tiles for use in our Children’s Pool and we were thrilled by the response. The winning entries include this lovely design by Juno, aged 8, which highlights the importance of learning to swim and life saving. Her tile will join those created by students from Writhlington and Beechen Cliff Schools.
New Branding Countdown
Way back in August we introduced you to the very talented Matthew Croft, a new volunteer who has worked incredibly hard over the last six months to produce our new branding. We will be unveiling it in all its glory next month. For a sneak peek make sure you are signed up to our social media channels for the official unveiling on 4th February. We can’t wait to share it with you!
Fundraising We are always fundraising, so if you’d like to make a donation (large or small!) we would be very grateful. Please follow this link: https://bit.ly/2MxFkhv
