This week we lift up the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland for their incredible witness of forgiveness and their staunch stance against the death penalty.
In 1995, Sr. Joanne Marie Mascha was murdered while walking in the woods behind their congregation's motherhouse. Leading up to the trial that followed, her sisters advocated strongly against the death penalty for the perpetrator. The man who committed the crime was sentenced to fifty years to life.
This past September, the Ursuline Sisters received a letter from the man who killed Sr. Joanne Marie. In the letter, he asked the sisters for their forgiveness. In a reply letter, the sisters forgave him, and asked him to live out his desire for forgiveness by "being a person of goodness, peace and kindness."
This year, 30 years after their sister's murder, the Ursuline Sisters are sharing a message of forgiveness and advocating to abolish the death penalty once and for all.
We at FutureChurch are incredibly moved by this story, and would like to thank the Ursuline Sisters for their courageous witness of forgiveness. See the links below to learn more about this powerful story, and to learn how to stand in solidarity with the Ursuline Sisters.
