State Spotlight: California
by Alice Neuhauser ‘84, California Action Team Co-Leader
(Note: This is the second in our State Spotlight series on the Crimson Goes Blue target states)
California, a resoundingly blue state with the fifth largest economy in the world, fell down on the job in the 2022 midterms. The GOP flipped two US House seats and the Democrats failed to flip a couple of hoped-for seats, paving the way for the Republican majority in the House. If we are going to reclaim the House majority in 2024, it is vital that California reverse these losses.
That will be the main work of the Crimson Goes Blue California Action Team. Fortunately, there are a number of factors weighing in our favor. Typically, presidential elections tend to drive up voter turnout. With Trump continuing to suck up all of the air in the country and currently the clear front-runner for the GOP, Californians will be poised to vote against him. We also have a significant Senate race to fill a seat that has not been open for thirty years. California’s “top two” system will almost guarantee that the general election race to fill Dianne Feinstein’s seat will be between two Democrats, which will likely generate strong Democratic turnout.
The CGB California Action Team is already gearing up for our work to flip CD 13, 22, 27, 41, and 45 and protect CD 47. Winning these 6 competitive House seats alone could lead to Democrats taking back the House. The 5 seats to be flipped are all Republicans in districts that Biden won in 2020.
In Southern California we have begun in-person voter registration, thus far focusing on the youth vote by going to community college campuses. Stay tuned for information regarding our voter registration event in late October.
Learn more at our monthly CA Team meetings – the next is scheduled for Thursday, Oct 19 at 12 noon PT/3pm ET. Register here. We had a great turnout last month and are excited to have even more folks join us. In particular, we would love to get more of our Northern California members involved. We don’t want to miss opportunities for participation in that Democratic powerhouse location!
