Spring has sprung! The last couple months have been busy and fulfilling. I participated in the Winter Village Music Camp in Ithaca during March and met so many friendly enthusiasts of old time and banjo music. A wonderful group of students, and it was an honor to be amongst a really impressive lineup of instructors who inspired me both as musicians and as teachers. I even got to perform a duet with one of my heroes Bruce Molsky. Check out the video below (Exclusive only to the Bleuniverse!).
I spent most of the month of April recording a collection of instrumental banjo tunes that are near and dear to my heart. Some tunes older than anyone alive, some modern old time classics, and one I wrote the day I recorded it. Expect to hear a lot more about this project in coming newsletters. It's the music that is in my head all the time.
Things are starting to heat up in the gigging world. So much amazing local music wherever you go. I'll be grateful to see any of you the next time I see you. Maybe at one of these shows...
Our official Debut! This is a project that grew organically on a hillside in Bristol, NY with some of my best friends. I've been playing music with Aaron Lipp for almost 10 years, and you might know Max Flansburg from his kickass bluegrass group Dirty Blanket. Along with Will Sigel, the drummer from Aaron's Slacktones, and yours truly on bass, we are Temple Cabin Band!
I did this last year and it was a lot of fun. Come out to Cherry Hill Campground and spend the night around the campfire with me and my friends. I'll play solo til 11pm and then it's time to hang and cook smores. Free for campers or $5 cover if you want to come just for the show. Kids are free. Let's make this a party.
Green Heron and I met at the Oldtone Festival a few years back and we hit it off quick. They play old songs with the kind of swagger and joy that I love, and they write their own too, but you'd think they are old chestnuts. I'll do a set, they'll do a set, and you can count on a healthy amount of interplay, too. You don't want to miss this kind of experience at this intimate cafe that converts to a magical folk club.
