Habitat Sonore: An Introduction
Presenting its eighth program, Habitat Sonore is an intimate listening space designed to accommodate a maximum of 10 people. This small capacity enhances total immersion into the sound world of artists from here and elsewhere. The experience unfolds in near darkness, which helps to emphasize the sound.
First Program: Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of MUTEK (August 17-30)
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of MUTEK, a major event dedicated to live electronic music and real-time audiovisual performance, Habitat Sonore offers an exclusive listening experience. PHI celebrates this anniversary by offering Habitat Sonore's audience a dive into the history and future of the festival through a selection of exclusive performances and sound creations. Three programs are available:
Discover a selection from the album Everywhen by Jonathan Kawchuk, recorded in Dolby Atmos, which merges the human voice, the sounds of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, and the sine tones of a synthesizer. Also explore Holding by Zoë Mc Pherson, a work born from the Berlin lockdown, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and transformative justice practices, reflecting individual rhythms and societal transformations.
Experience a segment of Lolupupi Kutiku by Sofie Birch, a soundscape blending nature recordings, synthesizers, and therapeutic instruments, creating a mysterious and silky trance. Also dive into The Sound and The Fury by Ela Minus, mixed in Dolby Atmos to provide an immersive experience that illuminates new corners of sound and makes music a rich and habitable space.
Discover Consolation In Constellation by Flabbergast, an unexpected collaboration composed of Guillaume Coutu Dumont and Vincent Lemieux, merging electronic, jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary sounds. Since their collaboration for MUTEK_rec, Flabbergast has evolved towards more focused compositions and launched is own label, Copier/Coller, in 2023.

Second Program: Return of Pitchblack Playback with RITUAL by Jon Hopkins (Starting September 5)
In 2023, Habitat Sonore charmed the public with Pitchblack Playback featuring Music For Psychedelic Therapy, Jon Hopkins’ previous album. The event sold out in record time!
This year, the British artist returns with a new epic work. A week after its official release, the public will be able to discover RITUAL (Domino Record), the latest album by Jon Hopkins, in its entirety at the PHI Centre. This new opus, the kinetic counterpart to Music For Psychedelic Therapy, is a ceremonial epic of 41 minutes, composed of cavernous subs, hypnotic drumming, and transcendent melodic interactions.
Join us for a spatial audio experience on September 5 in Space 1 of the PHI Centre. This celebration will continue with listening sessions in our listening room, Habitat Sonore, from September 6-8 and September 13-15.
