Today's Bible Study Lesson
“God
Foretells Destruction”
Aim: Understand why
God would destroy Babylon;
Grapple
with the destructiveness of delighting in power and pleasure; and
Repent
from thoughts, actions, and feelings that separate us from God.
Background:
Isaiah 47
Bible Lesson:
Isaiah
47:10-15
“Thus
shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, [even] thy
merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his
quarter; none shall save thee.” Isaiah 47:15 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The theme for the Summer Quarter
is “Partners in a New Creation.”
For the month of June, we will be looking at lessons from the book
of Isaiah. The Old Testament Book of Isaiah is part of the set of
books classified as the Major Prophets which includes prophets with
lengthy periods
of service. Their messages are not any more important than those
of the Minor Prophets.
Isaiah was a prophet to Judah and his prophetic ministry addressed
the reigns of the
following kings of Judah: Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Their
reigns cover a span of 113
years. His prophesy addressed Judah’s idolatry and oppression.
Isaiah’s prophesies spoke of judgement, renewal, and hope as he
foretold Judah’s Babylonian captivity, their return from exile and
the coming of the Messiah. Judah was the southern kingdom comprised
of the ancestral tribes of Judah and Benjamin.
This kingdom
formed after the break up of the united
kingdom of Israel after the
reign of King Solomon. Babylon, the capital of Babylonia, was
located on
the Euphrates River,
about 200 miles above its junction with the Tigris, which flowed
through its midst and divided it into two almost equal parts.
This
geographic area is modern day Iraq.
Under
the Chaldean ruler King
Nebuchadnezzar,
it became one of the most splendid cities of the ancient world.
This
pagan nation’s
religion, included the ritual care and worship of the statues of
deities considered sacred; they believed the gods lived
simultaneously in their statues in temples and in the natural forces
they embodied.
At
the time of our lesson, Judah is under Babylonian captivity.
Isaiah’s prophesy foretells the overthrow of Babylon by the
Medo-Persian
empire
which ultimately leads
to the people of Judah
returning
to Jerusalem.
-
Isaiah
47:10-11, The Pride of Babylon and Its
Consequences: God raised up
the Babylonians to discipline Judah for their disobedience and
idolatrous behavior. The Babylonians took Judah into exile and
treated them viciously unkind, well beyond what God had
intended. They showed no mercy
and delighted in the mistreatment of the
people of Judah. As
the Babylonians
became more powerful, they
began to believe that their new found power was of
their own doing. They even believed that they were not accountable
to anyone, not even
God. Babylon had falsely
believed in their supremacy, independence, and invincibility.
Isaiah’s prophesy of
Babylonian disaster foretold of the
sudden overthrow which they would experience and that
they would be
powerless to
prevent it. The Babylonians would not even be able to use
their vast wealth and influence to stave off
the oncoming
disaster. Now Babylon would
be the target of God’s judgment at the hands of the Medo-Persian
empire as
Judah was the target of God’s judgement at the hands of
Babylonians.
-
Isaiah
47:12-13, False Trust in Babylon’s
Expertise: Isaiah’s prophesy
even mocked Babylonian
use of enchantments and magic which they believed had been used
successfully across time. He
sarcastically urged them to
consult the
prognosticators, astrologers, stargazers and the like to
see if they could
prevent the disaster foretold for them. In the past, Babylonia had
relied on prognosticators, astrologers, stargazers and the like to
foretell the future. Isaiah proclaimed that
these folks would be
useless in adverting the coming calamity.
-
Isaiah
47:14-15, The Ultimate Demise of Babylon: Isaiah
compares the messages from the Babylonian prognosticators,
astrologers, stargazers and the like, to stubble that is used in a
bonfire or campfire; however, the difference in
this fire and a
bonfire or campfire, is that instead of
the Babylonians enjoying
the warmth
and spectacular sight of the flames, the Babylonians would
experience dread, despair, and helplessness. Even those nations who
had befriended the Babylonians over the years would not come to
their rescue or respond to their cries for assistance during the
Medo-Persian overthrow. Just as God had raised up Babylonians to
discipline Judah, God was using Persia to punish the Babylonians for
their ungodliness and their pride.
Take
Aways:
-
In
God’s sovereignty, He can use anyone or anything in His creation
to carry out His plans.
-
It
is dangerous to neglect to recognize that any successes or
achievements that we experience ultimately come from God’s
gracious Blessings.
-
We
all must humbly acknowledge that all Blessings flow from God.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Pride
[goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18 KJV
“A
man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble
in spirit.” Proverbs 29:23 KJV
“For
my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways,
saith the LORD.” Isaiah 55:8 KJV
“There
is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are]
the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12 KJV
“Trust
in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own
understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct
thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct
him? But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:16 KJV
