November Newsletter

Dear ,

In this month of Thanksgiving, we just wanted to tell you how grateful we are to you, our customers, for your ongoing support; for the government grants we received; and for Nicholas Sparks and his willingness to do an in-person event. We know a lot of businesses have fared much worse and our hearts go out to them. This year there will be no Clemson-Carolina game to compete with Small Business Saturday, so please make a concerted effort to support your favorite small businesses either online or in person on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Due to COVID and social distancing, printers have reduced capacity and publishers are warning us about possible stock shortages during the holiday season. We encourage all our customers to consider holiday shopping as early as possible this year and to place paid pre-orders with us to guarantee your gifts.

We also have learned that the city of Greenville voted last week to renew and expand their mask ordinance. Please note that Fiction Addiction is within city limits. The ordinance, which is good for 60 days (approx. 12/11), now says: "All persons entering a Retail Establishment must wear a Face Covering while inside the establishment." Please take up any concerns you have re this issue directly with the mayor and city council and not our store staff :) https://www.greenvillesc.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2080

For those who don't want or cannot wear a mask, we are happy to offer curbside pickup or mail order.

Also, please note that we are closed for both Thanksgiving and Black Friday (11/26-11/27). We hope that you have a wonderful time celebrating with your family, and look forward to seeing you for Small Business Saturday!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

82 Days on Okinawa: One American's Unforgettable Firsthand Account of the Pacific War's Greatest Battle by Colonel Art Shaw and Robert L. Wise

An unforgettable soldier’s-eye view of the Pacific War’s bloodiest battle, by the first American officer ashore Okinawa.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, 1.5 million men gathered aboard 1,500 Allied ships off the coast of the Japanese island of Okinawa. The men were there to launch the largest amphibious assault on the Pacific Theater. War planners expected an 80 percent casualty rate.

The first American officer ashore was then-Major Art Shaw (1920-2020), a unit commander in the U.S. Army’s 361st Field Artillery Battalion of the 96th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Deadeyes. For the next three months, Shaw and his men served near the front lines of the Pacific’s costliest battle, their artillery proving decisive against a phantom enemy who had entrenched itself in the rugged, craggy island.

Over eighty-two days, the Allies fought the Japanese army in a campaign that would claim more than 150,000 human lives. When the final calculations were made, the Deadeyes were estimated to have killed 37,763 of the enemy. The 361st Field Artillery Battalion had played a crucial role in the victory. The campaign would be the last major battle of World War II and a key pivot point leading to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and to the Japanese surrender in August, two months after the siege’s end.

Filled with extraordinary details, Shaw’s gripping account gives lasting testimony to the courage and bravery displayed by so many on the hills of Okinawa.

Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson

Each kindness makes the world a little better

This unforgettable book is written and illustrated by the award-winning team that created The Other Side and the Caldecott Honor winner Coming On Home Soon. With its powerful anti-bullying message and striking art, it will resonate with readers long after they've put it down.

Chloe and her friends won't play with the new girl, Maya. Every time Maya tries to join Chloe and her friends, they reject her. Eventually Maya stops coming to school. When Chloe's teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe is stung by the lost opportunity for friendship, and thinks about how much better it could have been if she'd shown a little kindness toward Maya.

Channel Kindness: Stories of Kindness and Community by Born This Way Foundation and Lady Gaga

For Lady Gaga, kindness is the driving force behind everything she says and does.

The quiet power of kindness can change the way we view one another, our communities, and even ourselves. She embodies this mission, and through her work, brings more kindness into our world every single day.

Lady Gaga has always believed in the importance of being yourself, being kind to yourself, and being kind to others, no matter who they are or where they come from. With that sentiment in mind, she and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they've collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world, proving that kindness truly is the universal language. And now, we invite you to read these stories and follow along as each and every young author finds their voice just as Lady Gaga has found hers.

Within these pages, you’ll meet young changemakers who found their inner strength, who prevailed in the face of bullies, who started their own social movements, who decided to break through the mental health stigma and share how they felt, who created safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and who have embraced kindness with every fiber of their being by helping others without the expectation of anything in return.

In one story, you’ll read about a young person with an autoimmune disease, who after being bullied at school, learned how to practice self-love and started an organization with the mission of educating others about the importance of self-love, too; and in another story, you’ll meet a young person who decided to start a movement to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to talk about their feelings openly and honestly, a reminder that kindness and mental wellness go hand in hand.

Not only were we moved by these individual acts of kindness, but we were also touched by the many stories of organizations, neighborhoods, and entire communities that fully dedicated themselves to helping those in need and found new, innovative ways to make our world a kinder and braver place.

Individually and collectively, these stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world.

As the trip comes to an end, the children leave the farm with full hearts -- and bulging bellies -- reminding people and poultry alike that there is much to be thankful for.

About the Book:

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Castle and The Girls of Atomic City comes a new way to look at American history through the story of giving thanks.

From Ancient Rome through 21st-century America, bestselling author Denise Kiernan brings us a biography of an idea: gratitude, as a compelling human instinct and a global concept, more than just a mere holiday. Spanning centuries, We Gather Together is anchored amid the strife of the Civil War, and driven by the fascinating story of Sarah Josepha Hale, a widowed mother with no formal schooling who became one of the 19th century’s most influential tastemakers and who campaigned for decades to make real an annual day of thanks.

Populated by an enthralling supporting cast of characters including Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Sojourner Truth, Walt Whitman, Norman Rockwell, and others, We Gather Together is ultimately a story of tenacity and dedication, an inspiring tale of how imperfect people in challenging times can create powerful legacies.

Working at the helm of one of the most widely read magazines in the nation, Hale published Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and others, while introducing American readers to such newfangled concepts as “domestic science,” white wedding gowns, and the Christmas tree. A prolific writer, Hale penned novels, recipe books, essays and more, including the ubiquitous children’s poem, “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” And Hale herself never stopped pushing the leaders of her time, in pursuit of her goal.

The man who finally granted her wish about a national “thanksgiving” was Lincoln, the president of the war-torn nation in which Hale would never have the right to vote.

Illuminating, wildly discussable, part myth-busting, part call to action, We Gather Together is full of unexpected delights and uneasy truths. The stories of indigenous peoples, immigrant communities, women’s rights activists, abolitionists, and more, will inspire readers to rethink and reclaim what it means to give thanks in this day and age. The book’s message of gratitude—especially when embraced during the hardest of times—makes it one to read and share, over and over, at any time of year.

The Best of Me by David Sedaris - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

David Sedaris’s best stories and essays, spanning his remarkable career—as selected by the author himself

For more than twenty-five years, David Sedaris has been carving out a unique literary space, virtually creating his own genre. A Sedaris story may seem confessional, but is also highly attuned to the world outside. It opens our eyes to what is at absurd and moving about our daily existence. And it is almost impossible to read without laughing.

Now, for the first time collected in one volume, the author brings us his funniest and most memorable work. In these stories, Sedaris shops for rare taxidermy, hitchhikes with a lady quadriplegic, and spits a lozenge into a fellow traveler’s lap. He drowns a mouse in a bucket, struggles to say “give it to me” in five languages, and hand-feeds a carnivorous bird.

But if all you expect to find in Sedaris’s work is the deft and sharply observed comedy for which he became renowned, you may be surprised to discover that his words bring more warmth than mockery, more fellow-feeling than derision. Nowhere is this clearer than in his writing about his loved ones. In these pages, Sedaris explores falling in love and staying together, recognizing his own aging not in the mirror but in the faces of his siblings, losing one parent and coming to terms—at long last—with the other.

Taken together, the stories in TheBest of Me reveal the wonder and delight Sedaris takes in the surprises life brings him. No experience, he sees, is quite as he expected—it’s often harder, more fraught, and certainly weirder—but sometimes it is also much richer and more wonderful.

Full of joy, generosity, and the incisive humor that has led David Sedaris to be called “the funniest man alive” (Time Out New York), The Best of Me spans a career spent watching and learning and laughing—quite often at himself—and invites readers deep into the world of one of the most brilliant and original writers of our time.

Dearly by Margaret Atwood

We not only love the way Margaret Atwood sees the world, we also love the way she describes the world. From sensuality in nature to growing older (which, in Atwood's world is OK for the faint of heart and memories of the past), the poems in Dearly display a sensitive understanding of the human condition with just the right amount of humor peppered throughout. It's a joy to move through this collection; to understand the change of seasons and the wonderful world that surrounds us.

In Dearly, Margaret Atwood’s first collection of poetry in over a decade, Atwood addresses themes such as love, loss, the passage of time, the nature of nature and - zombies. Her new poetry is introspective and personal in tone, but wide-ranging in topic. In poem after poem, she casts her unique imagination and unyielding, observant eye over the landscape of a life carefully and intuitively lived.

While many are familiar with Margaret Atwood’s fiction—including her groundbreaking and bestselling novels The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, Oryx and Crake, among others—she has, from the beginning of her career, been one of our most significant contemporary poets. And she is one of the very few writers equally accomplished in fiction and poetry. This collection is a stunning achievement that will be appreciated by fans of her novels and poetry readers alike.

The Ickabog by J.K. Rowling

From J.K. Rowling, a warm, fast-paced, funny fairy tale of a fearsome monster, thrilling adventure, and hope against all odds.

Once upon a time there was a tiny kingdom called Cornucopia, as rich in happiness as it was in gold, and famous for its food. From the delicate cream cheeses of Kurdsburg to the Hopes-of-Heaven pastries of Chouxville, each was so delicious that people wept with joy as they ate them.

But even in this happy kingdom, a monster lurks. Legend tells of a fearsome creature living far to the north in the Marshlands... the Ickabog. Some say it breathes fire, spits poison, and roars through the mist as it carries off wayward sheep and children alike. Some say it's just a myth...

And when that myth takes on a life of its own, casting a shadow over the kingdom, two children - best friends Bert and Daisy - embark on a great adventure to untangle the truth and find out where the real monster lies, bringing hope and happiness to Cornucopia once more.

Featuring full color illustrations by children from across the United States and Canada, this original fairy tale from one of the world's most celebrated storytellers will captivate readers of all ages.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

Wow! If I could give this one higher than a 10 I would. I rarely read YA or Dystopian but I am sure glad I read this one. The description of a mashup of Hand Maids Tale and Lord of the Flies with girls instead of boys is right on. But, it is much more than that. Tierney has always been different and while she doesnt actively rebel against the patriarchal society that rules the area she lives in she also doesnt embrace it like most of the other girls do. She hopes to just get through her grace year and come back and work in the fields (not a treasured position like getting a veil). The book paints almost as bad a picture of what women do to each other as it does of what men do to women. The writing is lyrical and yet Liggett doesnt mince words when she describes the violence that takes place during the grace year and as part of the countys patriarchal society. Tierney is a powerful main character who suffers immensely in order to stay true to what she believes. There were many times in the book that I wished she had taken a different path for her own sake but the fact that she didnt take the easy way out and that she understood the need to act together was a great lesson. I couldnt envision how Liggett would be able to keep to the storyline and yet still show us hope for the future but she managed it beautifully. This is one of the few books that I would like to read again and again.

Nothing More Dangerous by Allen Eskens

'Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.' by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. This is the basis for Allen Eskins masterfully written coming of age story. Eskins began writing the novel to explore his own feelings about prejudice and racism and 20 years later he finally decided it was ready. And, it couldnt be a more perfect read for todays world. It is a coming of age story that will make you laugh and cry and cry some more as 15 yo Boady Sanden is forced to grow up during the violent summer of 1976 in the Ozark town of Jessup, MO. Boady lives with his widowed mother way out in the country with only one neighbor. Hoke is a man of mystery who has been there as long as Boady can remember and who has taken Boady under his wing and quietly taught him things he thought a boy should know. Nothing More Dangerous is much more than simply a coming of age story. It is a story of family, guilt, benevolence and a mystery that addresses prejudice, racism and class. It is filled with vivid characters and a small town insular atmosphere which helps to make this one of the most memorable books I have read this year.

Jacquline Winspears memoir is a trip back in time to the countryside of England in the mid-1950s. Hers was not a privileged childhood but one of working in the fields and anywhere else she could make money to help out her family. The Well of Ice by Andrea Carter

A delightful and cleverly written book. Andrea Carter paints a lush picture in your mind of an idyllic Irish town (Glendara) loaded with colorful and well developed characters. As she tells us the story of Benedicta 'Ben' OKeeffe, a young solicitor attempting to rebuild her life after the murder of her sister, an intriguing and complex tale begins to build. Ben travels to Dublin and a chance encounter with Luke Kirby, her former lover and the man who has just been released from prison after serving his sentence for the murder of Bens sister. Or was it simply a chance encounter? The author spins a story with a complex web of characters, all of whom are inextricably tied to the story in some way. When Ben returns to Glendara and finds the local pub burnt down and the barmaid missing, she begins taking matters into her own hands to get to the bottom of this tragic series of events. When she learns that Luke Kirby has found a new young girlfriend from the town and has decided to make Glendara his new home, things take a sinister turn for Ben and Glendara. I strongly recommend this one for a real 'whodunit' read!

This has him in the cross-hairs of 'Deep State' operatives intent on taking down him and his administration. Hayley finds herself caught up in the intricate plot and may be the only one who can stop it. Prepare to stay up late with this one until you reach the epic climax. Perhaps ironically, I really think this book would appeal equally to suspense loving readers on either side of the political spectrum!

I enjoy suspense, complex political plots, psychological thrillers, really any good mystery. I also enjoy southern historical novels, especially those set in Appalachia as well as regency romance.

Do Not Disturb by Claire Douglas

It's a new start for this family, after experiencing a near tragedy. Theyve now moved from London to Wales and have remodeled an old rectory, making it into a guesthouse. But the old rectory has secrets, and the village has secrets, and this little family has secrets. And where there are secrets, there are lies. And when a death occurs in the B&B, the police are not satisfied that its an accident. Too many suspects crowd this B&B and no one knows who to trust. A captivating, but complex plot, this thriller will grab you on the first page and keep you reading until its last, shocking page. Its fast-paced, with lots of twists and turns, a bit dark at times, and full of suspense. And, youll never expect this surprise ending!!

Piece of My Heart by Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke

I anxiously await the collaborations between these authors. I read Mary Higgins Clark as soon as I discovered mysteries, and Alafair Burke quickly became a favorite. This series delves into personal relationships and crimes and merges the two into engaging and suspense filled plots. Laurie and Alex have found happiness and the making of a new family, then in an instant everything changes. When you have a judge, a former high ranking police official and a true crime show producer enemies are plentiful. The trick is finding out which one is involved. A fast paced plot with very emotional aspects makes for a great read.
