Favorite Read that will Catapult Your Results in 2021

I have been in stiff competition. I am losing, but to save face, I am going all out anyway, so I won’t lose as badly. ☺

The ironic thing is I am losing to my former self. Gees. Now that is kind of embarrassing. In 2019, I worked on finishing up my second master’s degree, and I somehow managed to read more books than I have in 2020.


Granted, 2020 was one major roller coaster ride, but still, I have been mostly home since March, and that is a lot of extra time. In the midst of the swirling, I guess I didn’t indulge in the joy of reading as much as I did in 2019.

My only real explanation was maybe having classes that required me to read, and all those book clubs I was in really held my feet to doing something I love to do. Hmm. Maybe accountability works.

Just kidding. Of course, it does.

Despite falling short by six books in 2020 of my accomplishment in 2019, I want to tell you about THE most amazing book I did read in 2020. This book has been mind-blowing, and I hope it will be for you.

The Power of Habit
A little context

Before I do so, let me provide a little context. In 2012 the landmark book, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg was published. It was named one of the best books of the year by The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times.

In this book, Duhigg highlighted the habit loop and how understanding the loop can increase sales in the marketplace.

He also introduced the idea of keystone habits. He claimed that some habits matter more than others. There are “keystone habits start a process that, over time, transforms everything” (Duhigg 101).

This idea that knowing which habit to focus on to achieve better results took the business world by storm.

A 1% Change

What James Clear, an expert on habits, did through his work with over 10,000 leaders was take Charles Duhigg’s work and dive deeper into how to determine those keystone habits and how to really create change. He highlighted the research in his book, Atomic Habits.



There are soo many mind-blowing concepts in his book that, when applied, can transform your business and life. For today I want to focus on the thesis of his book. Clear claims that when you improve your performance “by 1 percent, you will get a significant increase” (Clear 14).

Just 1%! Performing 1% better than you did yesterday is a doable task. 

From his research, he found that in the long run, by improving your habit just a small fraction, the habit will have “compound interest of self-improvement” (Clear 16).

The reason that this 1% works and is so powerful is that the root of getting a habit to stick is determined by your identity. Clear says, “identity is about what you believe” (31). When you start believing that you are the “type of person who” (33), the habit sticks.

So, who do want to become?

So, for 2021, who do what to become? Personally, I want to be a person who reads more books than my former self. ☺. (Yep, still in competition with myself.)

Since that is the goal, I just need to change 1% of my behavior. That can be as simple as after I brush my teeth, I open a book instead of looking at my phone. I will do this because I am a person who values increasing my knowledge to serve my clients and family better.

I can do that, well, at least tonight I can. Seeing myself as the person who values that is the secret.
