From the Director
Our Annual Report - Let's review our collective accomplishments
Dear NEXT Village Community -
Since you are the ones that make it possible for us to connect, engage, and be of service to seniors in northeast San Francisco, we are proud to share some statistics from our efforts these past 12 months. Camille Kelem, our Volunteer Coordinator has created a nifty snapshot (above) that highlights some of our accomplishments. We are thrilled that with the help of our ace volunteers we were able to honor over 2,500 service requests.
It's so wonderful that members are asking for the help they need/want. By the end of the fiscal year (June 30th), our volunteers will have provided over 4,000 hours of support and companionship. If we had a horn, we would toot it! Hosting 500+ social, cultural, and educational events is also another remarkable feat. Donna Booher, Director of D2U, deserves much of the credit for the great programming - on Zoom and in public. Many thanks to all who so kindly donated their time and talent to lead great classes and to our members and the general public who attended.
NEXT Village SF is a member-driven organization, and many of our programs stem from member suggestions. If you have an idea for us, please feel free to let us know.
We look forward to another successful year full of love, laughs, learning, and a little helping hand. Thank you for all that you do to keep this Village running.
We hope to see you soon, Around The Village! Until then, take care,
Jacqueline & the team at NEXT.

Meet the Hosts of NEXT's Podcast, Not Born Yesterday...
Happy Birthday, Not Born Yesterday!
Congratulations on this major milestone! One year of interesting topics and guests.
Thanks to volunteers Lynn Winter Gross and Miriam Goodman, NEXT Village is the first and only Village in the country with a podcast. If you haven’t listened yet, here are just a few of the 25 great episodes Lynn and Miriam have produced to date:
When Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong (Romance Scams)
We Watch Your Money, Honey (Fiduciary agents)
Older, Wiser, Fabulous! (Older adults are the new majority)
Rightsizing, not Downsizing (How to keep only the things we love)
When Someone Dies, A Practical Guide (Help lessen the trauma and burden of death)
Each episode is approximately 20 minutes and is chock-full of helpful information and tips that are well worth the listen. With over 5,000 “listens” many people tune-in while on their daily walks, while doing the dishes, or in the doctor’s waiting room. Give it a try! Available wherever you get your podcasts - you can even Google “Not Born Yesterday podcast” and find the show directly from there. (If you’d like some help locating and listening to the show, please let us know. We’re happy to help.)
Thank you, Lynn and Miriam.

SF History: San Francisco's Amusement Parks ~ How People Frolicked before Digital Devices & Electricity!
There is little doubt the Cool Grey City was a fun place back in the day. San Franciscans and visitors certainly knew how to have a rollicking good time. But how did people amuse themselves in old San Francisco before the days of digital diversions ... or electricity? Believe it or not, the City's seven square miles contained a surprising number of large and very popular amusement parks between the 1860s and the early 1970s. Catherine Accardi is going to take us on an eye opening virtual tour filled with photos and stories so we can enjoy the thrills of yesteryears' parks of amusement. For some, her stories will bring back memories of childhood joy (or terror) at your first encounter with Laffing Sal at Playland or taking a watery plunge on one of the SF Chutes. For the younger set or more recent transplants to SF, you'll see and learn about former amusements all over SF, perhaps even in your neighborhood!
Join us for another one of Catherine's fantastic SF history romps to bring back memories or introduce you to yet another aspect of the fascinating history of our fair City! We hope some of you will share your stories about old SF amusements! If you have friends, family or neighbors who might enjoy reminiscing or learning about old SF amusement parks, forward this invite to them so they don't miss out! Like most NEXT Village events, this event is FREE and people don't need to be a NEXT Village member to attend

There are the charming children's mosaics at the Harvey Milk Academy, the amazing Caselli Mansion (a Queen Anne on steroids), an interesting Spanish style home once lived in by Robin Williams, and the thought provoking Pink Triangle Park, to name a few.

6 Ways to Prevent Heat Stroke in Seniors |
|
In hot weather, heat stroke in seniors is a serious risk.
Older bodies are less sensitive to changes in temperature and can’t
adjust as well. So, seniors might not even notice that they’re
overheating – until they become ill.
And chronic health conditions and common medications, like beta
blockers for high blood pressure, also make it harder for the body to
respond to heat.
The article below explains what heat stroke is and shares 6 tips to prevent older adults from overheating.

Changes to Medi-Cal eligibility & asset limitations |
|
A historic change in Medi-Cal that will take effect July 1, 2022. The change significantly increases the asset limit to qualify for Medi-Cal, from $2,000 to $130,000 for an individual. Due to the increase, more people are projected to qualify for Medi-Cal who were not eligible previously. The increase applies to Medi-Cal programs that currently have an asset requirement, including programs for Medicare beneficiaries. (Yes, you can have both Medicare and Medi-Cal.)
More details are forthcoming. If you have questions, please contact Elaine Wong Eakin at (510) 485-9869 or EWEakin@gmail.com.
To apply for Medi-Cal in San Francisco, contact the San Francisco Human Services Agency at https://www.sfhsa.org/services/health-food/medi-cal/apply-medi-cal
