Throughout the month of May we celebrate praying mothers in the Bible…praying mothers like Sarah, who prayed her way into old age!

Sarah had longed for, schemed for, and prayed for a child her entire life. At the age of 90, she still hadn’t received a tangible answer to her prayer until one day, her husband invited three strangers home for lunch.

During the conversation, as Sarah was listening from the other side of the tent wall, the guests tell Abraham that Sarah, is going to have a baby. Sarah laughs to herself at the absurdity. Clearly, these men didn’t know about pregnancy after a certain age!

But true to the word of the visitors, Sarah became pregnant and Isaac was born. This child of her old age was one she longed for, prayed for, and hoped for. This was a child that came as a direct answer from God.

Even though Sarah had doubted, laughed, and taken matters into her own hands by offering her slave to her husband, God answered her prayers and fulfilled His promise.

To God Be The Glory for Sarah’s prayer. Genesis 21:6-7 reads…God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. . . Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.

Here we will feature recipes from the 40 Year Christian Group. This week's recipe was submitted by Sister Alyce Emerson from Nutrition Education Program UK Cooperative Extension Service.

Lemon Broccoli Pasta

Ingredients

• 1 box (16 ounces)
  whole-wheat pasta (rotini, spaghetti, bowtie, elbow macaroni)
• 1 package (12 to 14 ounces)
  frozen broccoli
• Zest of one lemon
• Juice of one lemon (about
  2 tablespoons of lemon juice)
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 21/2 teaspoons garlic powder or 1 clove of garlic, minced
• 2 cups spinach
• 1 cup grated
  parmesan cheese
• 1 cup reserved pasta water
• Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Wash hands with warm water and soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
2. Boil water and prepare pasta according to package directions. Be sure to save 1 cup of pasta water for later use.
3. While the pasta cooks, microwave broccoli for about 5 minutes, or until thawed.
4. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add oil and sauté broccoli for 3-5 minutes.
5. Add cooked pasta to the saucepan with the broccoli.Add lemon zest, lemon juice, garlic, spinach, and reserved pasta water.Use tongs or a spoon to evenly combine everything.Cook until spinach is wilted, about 5 minutes.
6. Sprinkle over parmesan cheese and stir to combine.Reduce heat to low and cook for an additional3 to 5 minutes or until it reaches desired texture.
7. Serve.
8. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

Makes 8 servings

Current Focus: My focus is keeping my daughter, McKinley focused-focused on GOD, her school work,
her sports and volunteering.

Career: I am a medical professional. I currently serve as a Navigator for nephrology patients. A nephrology patient is someone who has kidney disease. Hypertension and diabetes are the two main causes of kidney disease/kidney failure. I make sure patients have follow up appointments once they are discharged from the hospital. Continued treatment is so important!

Why this Career?: When I was younger, I always wanted to work in the health care field. I knew I wanted to work with the elderly. I was surrounded by older people when I was a child. They loved me and I loved them. That motivated my career choices. I felt as a child that working with the elderly was my calling. I just knew GOD wanted me to help. As a navigator, my patients are elderly and young. I help patients of all ages.

What do you want your church family to know about you?:
Everybody knows everything about me. (LOL) I am the new Assistant Director of our Youth Department. I serve in with our missionaries. I have been doing missionary work with our church since I was a little girl. I like to volunteer. I pack meals to send overseas with other faith-based groups like Southland Christian Church. I also volunteer at GOD’s Pantry.

My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28. That verse keeps me going. It stops me from giving up. I do believe all things will work out for the good. I must be patient. When I am volunteering, I pray that the families who receive the food see that GOD is working things out for them! Someone is helping them get to a better situation. We all have to remember that GOD will send us help. GOD wants us to help others. We must trust HIM that someone is coming to help us.

What do you want your church family to know about GOD?:
GOD is always on time. Prayer works!!! Stay prayed up

Cathy Black, member of Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church and a leader in our television/media ministry was honored this past week with a luncheon (at “Malone’s”) and the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2025 by the University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information. Ms. Black also serves on the University’s Board of Trustees. She currently resides in New York City where she is employed by ABC News.

Humble and hardworking Cathy says “To God be the glory!”. She is grateful every day for the blessings He bestows upon us all.

Resilience When Stressed

To be resilient In stressful situations requires the ability to; Focus on self care, connect with others and practice mindfulness. Prioritize your physical wellbeing and engage in activities you enjoy. Build strong relationships, lean on your family and friends for emotional support and guidance. Connect with others who share your interests and seek professional and spiritual counseling when needed. Practice expressing gratitude for what you have and reflect on the positive aspects of your life. Find meaningful goals and work towards them to completion and learn from past experiences. Remember to avoid negative coping mechanisms and refrain from substances and engaging in behavior that threatens or worsens your mental health. Remember to take care of you!

FLU

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.

RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.

COVID-19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
