LETTER OF GRATITUDE
2021 IN KALPA

As we approach the end of the year and eagerly await new projects and visual journeys in 2022, at KALPA we have many reasons to be grateful. The beauty of our natural and architectonic environment, the richness of our art collection and the preciousness of our team, each key elements that lie at the basis of our passionate daily work. Taking inspiration from the deep and intrinsic connection between art and nature in both our exhibitions and art consultancy projects, our perennial goal is to promote art that brings to the fore a genuine introspective aesthetic experience.

In 2021 we inaugurated new exciting collaborations, welcomed more artists, their talents and their insightful artworks, curated and organised three refined exhibitions in the historic landmarks of Palazzo dei Priori in Volterra and Castello Ginori di Querceto.

By way of our projects, we have contributed to the enhancement of Volterra’s heritage, including architectural, productive, material and immaterial aspects, not least the long-term tradition of Alabaster stone. Combining energies in the creation of an abundant cultural experience, we have paved the way for artistic and thoughtful routes linking the historical centre of the city to the surrounding areas and promoting both its ancient and recent history of excellence in the arenas of salt, alabaster and wine.

KALPA ART & INTERIORS

Sophisticated and elegant atmosphere, sober and minimalistic furniture and warm neutral tones, KALPA’s main space in Palazzo Bonomini, located in the historical centre of Volterra, is an in-progress project giving a platform for various arts in its time-hallowed rooms. Beginning with the restoration work of the ground floor in the spring of 2019, KALPA will expand its exhibition space in the Palazzo in 2022, unveiling its beauty step by step and taking inspiration from the philosophy of wabi-sabi to the recovery of the original atmosphere of the building.

In 2021, new exquisite artworks have graced our Gallery. Painting, raku and raw earth, bronze, stone and wood are the mediums of the artists, the voice of our gallery’s exhibitions and the core of KALPA’s vision of art living. In this context, Volterra Alabaster has played a special role: we have worked at placing alabaster at the heart of the city’s imagery, with a return to the raw material for the creation of new forms of expression.

Our artists’ inspiration ever begins with the observation of Nature, its physical and conceptual forms. There is no attempt to hide the marks, the artist’s gesture, the imperfections and the accidental signs making our KALPA collection unique.

SEEDS | SEMI

SABINE PAGLIARULO | CERAMIC SCULPTURE

OLGA NIESCIER | INSTALLATION IN ALABASTER

PALAZZO DEI PRIORI, VOLTERRA

12 JUNE - 8 AUGUST 2021

Nature blossoms and generously renews herself, in a hidden and intimate space within the ancient walls. Sabine Pagliarulo and Olga Niescier’s double exhibition SEEDS | SEMI has addressed the idea of the seed and sowing as a driving force of life, a beginning without closure, a message for the moment. The show has presented an encounter of Pagliarulo and Niescier’s artistic sensibilities culminating in an organic intertwining of silver wires studded with myriad alabaster flakes flowing between the walls, with a refined, soft-colour sculptural group at its core.

ENLIGHTENED STONE ART RESIDENCY

ROBERTA BUSATO | AUGUST 2021

Every creative journey starts with a place. A mystical and geographical place you fell in love with, that you may feel and breathe. The journey undertaken by contemporary artist Roberta Busato has started in Volterra, since her first unexpected encounter with Alabaster: hidden colours, veins and mineral inclusions are intrinsic to this timeless stone, a reflection of the identity of the Etruscan city across past and present civilizations.

In the preparation of ENLIGHTENED STONE exhibition, Busato has spent a summer art residency at the cottage Podere Escaia, a magical place of bucolic dwellings and gardens, immersed in the wild nature surrounding Volterra: the perfect backdrop for a deep insightful creative act, contemplation and reconnection to the inner-self. All of this is part of Busato’s process of unveiling the core of the material, or precisely what it leads her to reveal to human eyes.

ENLIGHTENED STONE

ROBERTA BUSATO | SCULPTURE IN ALABASTER

PALAZZO DEI PRIORI, VOLTERRA

4 SEPTEMBER - 21 NOVEMBER 2021

After a summer art residence in the midst of Volterra natural landscape, a time of deep insightful creative act, contemplation and reconnection to the inner-self, Roberta Busato has opened her solo exhibition ENLIGHTENED STONE in September 2021. The exhibition has presented a series of new and enigmatic faces in agate, white alabaster and bardiglio, unfolding the passages of a ritual performed by the artist in the presence of the material found in the territory. Standing in the background, there was an evocative raw-earth wall covered in black pepper coloured dense texture, coming from company MATTEOBRIONI wall finish MultiTerra Pepe Nero. This was a real theatrical act that the spectator was invited to participate in.

REBIRTH

TAMARA FERIOLI | ORGANIC SCULPTURE

OLGA NIESCIER | PAINTING

CASTELLO GINORI DI QUERCETO, QUERCETO

11 JULY - 12 SEPTEMBER 2021

In a summer full of festivals, live music and performances at the Castello Ginori di Querceto, KALPA has presented the exhibition project REBIRTH | RINASCITA by Tamara Ferioli and Olga Niescier creating an elegant path of multiple organic-sculpted flowers and vertical pictorial canvases. Focusing on the ideas of renewal and turning point, the exhibition design was inspired by the narratives and visuals that are traditionally associated with processions and celebrations. Along the hieratic exposition nave, where silence dominates the space, Ferioli’s flowers proceed spontaneously towards Niescier's large final canvases, as if following a ritual of meditation and contemplation.
