Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Moses: Prophet of Deliverance”
Aim: Study Moses’ role as prophet of God in leading the Israelites out of Egypt, Reflect on leaders who guide us through seemingly impossible situations, and completely Rely on God in resolving challenging situations.
Background: Exodus 12:28-50; Deuteronomy 18:15-22
Bible Lesson: Deuteronomy 18:15-22
Memory Verses:
“The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;” Deuteronomy 18:15 KJV
Some Highlights:
- The word Deuteronomy means “repetition of the law”; thusly, it a restatement of God’s Law given to the Israelites. This Book of the Bible is the fifth book of the Pentateuch. Moses is believed to be the author of most of Deuteronomy.
- Moses was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage by continually confronting Pharaoh to let the Hebrew people leave Egypt. After God’s miraculous acts of ten devastating plagues, Pharaoh and the Egyptian people were left with no choice but to allow the Hebrew people leave Egypt. With the Egyptian army in hot pursuit, the Israelites crossed on dry land in the midst of the Red Sea to the other side. The Egyptian army pursing them drowned in the same Red Sea as the waters rescinded. The Israelites are now in the wilderness being led by Moses as he follows the directions of God.
- Our lesson opens with Moses telling the Israelites that the nations whose land that God is giving them practiced sorcery (magic and especially black magic) and divination (seeking knowledge of the future and the unknown by supernatural means) rather than seeking the Will of the only true God. Therefore Moses warns them not to adopt or follow the practice of seeking and depending on other gods like the Canaanites, Hittities, Amorites, Hivities, and Jebusites, whose land that the Israelites are about to occupy.
- Moses was up in age, but he reassured the Israelites that God would raise up other prophets like himself to reveal His Will to them. When they were camped near Mount Horeb, Moses went up on the mountain to receive the Word from God for the people. There was fire, smoke and clouds on the mountain and when Moses came down after spending time with God, his face was so radiant that the people asked that he wear a veil. At that time, the people asked Moses to talk directly with God and to bring the Word to them because they were fearful of the presence of the All Mighty God. God agreed and from that time on, Moses brought the Word from God to the people. Moses was their leader and God’s prophet. He received the messages from God and proclaimed them to the people. The message could be God’s laws or statutes or predictions of the future. Prophets many times used the phrase “Thus saith the Lord, …” meaning that their words came directly from God and not from themselves.
- The prophets that God promised to raise up from their bretheren following Moses would speak the Words of God and not their own. Moses warned the people that they must listen and obey these Words from God brought to them through His prophets. This long line of prophets were all leading up to the coming of the Messiah. The people would learn first hand that there were dire consequences for disobedience to God’s Laws.
- Similarly, prophets who were chosen by God were to faithfully communicate God’s messages to the people. Anyone who falsely claimed to be a prophet of God or a prophet of God who did not faithfully deliver to the people what was given to them by God would suffer dire consequences. In other words, both the prophets and people were accountable to God for their deception or their disobedience.
- Moses explained that one way to recognize a true prophet of God was to witness whether their prophesy came true. Also, the true message from God would be consistent with His Nature and not contradictory to former messages. Deuteronomy 13:1-5, warns that if a prophet’s prophesy comes true and the message includes directions to follow other gods, the prophet is not of God and must not be listened to. Further, prophets like Moses did not prophesize smooth paths and pander to the wickedness of the nation, did not prophesize for their own material or personal gain, challenged the oppressive and immoral government, and were not consumed by self-seeking ambitions.
Take Aways:
- We must seek God’s guidance in our everyday lives. God’s guidance is found in fervent prayer, prayerful Bible Study and prayerful discussions with mature fellow Christians.
- We must prayerfully approach embracing spiritual beliefs that may sound good; however, we must carefully examine them against what the Bible says on the subject.
- We must continually pray that God will provide His Wisdom at our life’s decision points.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” Matthew 7:15 KJV
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. “ 1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV
“ … we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, “Ephesians 4:14 NKJV
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, MEHARRY MEDICAL COLLEGE ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE PIPELINE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN PHYSICIANS, DENTISTS THROUGH ACCELERATED PROGRAM |
|
|
|
|
Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College, two historically Black academic institutions in Nashville, today announced a new partnership focused on establishing a pipeline of African-American doctors and dentists who will provide essential care to underserved communities. The historic agreement will recruit, select and support the medical education of a cadre of African American students who are interested in becoming physicians or dentists. The overriding goal is to increase the number of African American trained health care providers who will stay and work in minority communities that have the greatest burden of health care needs. The accelerated program seeks to reduce the amount of time it takes students to enter medical school. The traditional four-year Bachelor of Science degree will become a three-year program—students will spend three years pre-med at TSU before going on to study medicine or dentistry at Meharry. The result is total completion in seven years, instead of the customary eight years. Students participating in the pathways program will be those with the highest academic preparation and quality. Requirements for admission will be based on a 3.5 grade point average, a score of 1300 on the SAT (two components) or a 29 on the ACT. Mentoring, tutoring and coaching will be crosscutting elements of the program, as will be career and professional guidance for all students involved. 526 New COVID-19 Cases & 13 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
March 7, 2021
(59 New Cases in Fayette County)
Even with the availability of the long awaited COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people is a monumental task and will take time. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
