Long time subscribers will know I'm a big nerd on behaviour change. I love to experiment with ways to find that 1% improvement. I also believe a good understanding of behavioural science helps leaders and coaches become more effective.
This week I read How to Change by Katy Milkman. Through stories and science, it explores 8 traps that prevent people from changing:
- Not Getting Started
- Short Term Thinking
- Impulsivity
- Procrastination
- Forgetfulness
- Laziness
- Confidence
- Conformity
Many of these are rooted in cognitive biases and our assumptions about how change happens. Katy shares some practical ways you can overcome these traps.
If you have read any of these habits books I've previously summarised you won't find many new ideas. If you haven't, I suggest reading Atomic Habits which is my favourite book on behaviour change.
In this summary, I share each of the 8 traps and their antidotes.
