31 Big-headed Turtles released!!!

We are so happy to announce that from the 30th - 31st September 2018, the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of the Indo-Myanmar Conservation (IMC) and the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) of Cuc Phuong National Park brought a total of 31 Big-headed turtles (Platysternon megacephalum) home to a protected area in northern Vietnam. It has been a long road as we have tried to meet the requirements as set in the IUCN guidelines for Re-introductions.

Enforcement trainings held for two priority provinces of Vietnam

From 24th to 28th of September 2018, the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of the Indo-Myanmar Conservation (IMC) has worked in collaboration with the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) of Cuc Phuong National Park to hold two two-day long enforcement training courses for a total of 41 provincial authorities of Ha Noi city and Nghe An province. While Hanoi plays a very important role in stopping illegal wildlife trade as well as research and conservation of the world’s rarest turtle, the Swinhoe’s softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei), Nghe An has become a priority province for conservation of other critically endangered tortoise and freshwater turtle species of Vietnam.

Interview survey in north-western Vietnam – positive information for the Hoan Kiem turtle

From the 15th to the 27th of July 2018, a survey team from the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of Indo Myanmar Conservation (IMC) undertook a 2-week interview survey in Vietnam's Dien Bien province. Despite extreme weather with heavy rain and flooding throughout Northern Vietnam in preceding weeks, our team conducted nearly 80 interviews in 8 districts and the provincial capital of Dien Bien province. 30 Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Field Records were made and 5 species, namely, the Lesser Chinese Softshell Turtles (Pelodiscus paviformis), Wattle-necked Softshell Turtle (Palea steindachneri), Keeled Box Turtle (Cuora mouhotii), Impressed Tortoise (Manouria impressa) and Southeast Asian Leaf Turtle (Cyclemys oldhamii) were observed in local trade.

2018 wave of hatchling turtles from conservation centre in Vietnam

Since January 2018, we have started to find few clutches of species from southern Vietnam being kept at the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park, northern Vietnam, such as the endangered Elongated tortoise (Indotestudo elongata) and Giant Asian pond turtle (Heosemys grandis). With more species from north and central Vietnam starting nesting from the spring, we now having more than 400 eggs of 10 priorities speices in incubators.

Animal Planet films turtle rescue efforts in Vietnam

Back in November 2017 we were pleased to have the Australian veterinarian, television personality and author, Dr Chris Brown, and the film crew from the Animal Planet Channel at the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC), Cuc Phuong National Park. While at the TCC, Dr Brown worked with Dr Mike Selig of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (CMZ) to perform surgeries on two endangered Big-headed turtles which had been confiscated from illegal wildlife trade. On the 2nd July 2018, the film was aired on the Animal Planet Channel, namely Episode 4, Vietnam’s Endangered Animals.

A new skink of the genus Sphenomorphus Fitzinger, 1843 described from southern Vietnam

A new forest skink of the genus Sphenomorphus Fitzinger, 1843 (Squamata: Scincidae) has recently been described from the high elevation forest of Mount Hon Ba, Khanh Hoa Province, eastern of Langbian Plateau of southern Vietnam. The new member of the genus Sphenomorphus, Yersin's Forest Skink, S. yersini is described based on morphological characters of four specimens and a fragment of 653 nucleotides of the gene COI. The new species most resembles S. buenluoicus occurring in Kon Tum-Gia Lai Plateau in morphological features but both species can be distinguish from each other by tail length ratio (longer in the new species), ventral scale row (much higher in the new species), and hemipenis shape.
