ABSTRACT: Dr. Kleanthi Dima will provide an overview - from the European perspective - of the opportunities that POCT can provide while identifying the limitations to be considered when choosing whether to implement POCT or not, the clinically relevant analytical techniques, the current technologies, clinical applications, networking and quality issues, and regulatory aspects. In addition, latest technologies, e.g., novel POCT applications of molecular testing for the rapid identification of infectious agents as well as for non-pathogen-related problems will be presented. Another new area of POCT includes the companion diagnostics which help with the appropriate treatment choice, the continuous measurement of metabolites such as continuous transdermal glucose testing, and the Wearables. Finally, a short review of POCT for COVID 19 will close the presentation.

Dr. Kleanthi Dima is Associate Professor in Hellenic Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medical School. She has a degree in biology, an MSc in biochemistry, and a PhD in clinical chemistry. She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA and at Queen’s University Hospital, Nottingham, UK. She has the specialty of Clinical Chemistry from the National Board of Health and is a member of the accreditation body of the National System of Accreditation. She is a member in scientific societies and has authored publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as numerous abstracts and textbook chapters. From 2005 until 2015 she was appointed director of the Clinical Biochemistry Department of Attikon University Hospital in Athens. The last years she is focused on the establishment of POCT in the EDs of the public sector hospitals and health centers.
