“Whenever any of us does anything that has a negative impact on someone else, even where there is no power difference, we generally want to be seen for our intention rather than opening to see the impact on the other.”
Miki Kashtan
Reflection
Oh, so many times I have fallen into this trap! Someone reacts to something I have done or said and instead of listening with empathy, I start to explain myself. I can appreciate the beauty in the fact that I want to be seen and understood in my intention. However, I believe that it is very rare that I myself have been heard in my intention, until I have the capacity to hear how my actions have affected the other.
Today's exercise
Think of a conversation you had recently where you noticed that you ended up in a defensive position or started to explain yourself. Get in touch with the needs you tried to meet in yourself through this action. Do something right now to meet the needs you discovered. Maybe you can meet the needs on your own or maybe you need to talk or meet someone for the needs to be met?
