Sunday, November 3, 11:00 am, Sanctuary
"Seeds of Memory, Acts of Hope"
Join us in person or watch on YouTube.
On Sunday, November 3, we will reflect on the power of memory to shape our lives and guide us forward. How do we honor the wisdom of those who came before us? What role does memory play in helping us face the challenges of today with courage and hope? Drawing inspiration from figures like Norbert Čapek, whose legacy reminds us of the resilience of beauty and community, and Unitarian Adlai E. Stevenson, we explore how remembering becomes an act of hope—and how each of us can nurture that hope through small, meaningful actions.
As part of the service on Sunday, we plan to have an "All Souls" altar to be left up through November. Please bring photos and memorabilia of loved ones who have died, or you may simply add a name or two.
Participating in today’s service:
Service Leader: Scot Harvey; Worship Associate: Maureen Harvey; Chalice Lighter: Silver; Call to Offering: Susan Bishop; Choir Director: Chukwuebuka ('Ebuka) G. Ezeakacha; Music: 1UC Choir; Accompanist: Steven Elkins Kennedy; Technical Support: Tammy Epperson and Ellisya Ravencroft: Ushers: Members of 1UC VOICE
Our Ushers for the month of November are: Members of 1UC VOICE. VOICE (Voices Organized in Civic Engagement) is a coalition of dues-paying congregations, nonprofits, worker associations, and schools that have come together out of a deep sense of mission and concern about the pressures families face in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. They work to better understand those pressures by listening to the experiences of the people in our member institutions. They then engage those impacted in better understanding the issues and learning to work effectively for improvements that benefit all. While they differ on some issues, they focus on the areas in which they find the common ground that allows them to work together. They develop the leadership skills of our own members to work effectively within the democratic process with civic leaders and public officials on issues of concern to families.

Sunday, November 3, following the service
Let's Have Lunch!
Everyone loves an all-church potluck! On Sunday, November 3, we will share a potluck lunch after church! Bring your favorite main dish, side dish or dessert to the kitchen before the service. Members of the Membership Committee and Board of Directors, sponsors of the potluck, will arrange the food, prepare coffee and tea or lemonade and set up the tables and chairs.
(If you can give us a hand setting up ahead of time or breaking down the setup afterwards, please let Lorriana Lee-Knapp, Misslorriana@sbcglobal.net, or Barbara Gallivan, bgallivan@cox.net, know. We would appreciate that.)
This is a great opportunity for fellowship across generations and among families and singles.

The "Little" BIG Event Workday!
On Saturday, October 26, we participated in the University of Oklahoma Students Community Service Event. We received 14 students from 2 campus organizations. One was the Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority and one was the International Security Student Association (ISSA). They were very hard workers and a lot was accomplished. We managed to clean the recycle area, courtyard windows, courtyard deck, sanctuary walls & pews, and stairwells. One especially dirty job was cleaning the kitchen stove burner drip pan and scouring the griddle. The Wysteria was trimmed as well as the driveway fence line. A special thanks to Cathy Webster, Rob Hamm, Tom Peryam, Todd Hildebrandt, and Marlies Grogg for helping with the work and supervising the students.

The 1UC Alliance Brown Bag Lunch & Program
Greetings Alliance Members!
Our next scheduled meeting is on Tuesday, November 5th, Voting Day, and we have a great diversion planned.
Terry Ward will be regaling us with stories about her many travels, "The Misadventures of Terry."
Plan to be there at 11 am for the "Happy Half-Hour" with wine and a tasty appetizer (supplied by Bonnie).
This will be a "brown-bag" lunch followed by our business meeting, where we have several important items to discuss. I'm sorry I cannot be there, as I am a Poll Worker, and they need all hands on deck.
See you soon, Maureen

News from Befrienders
BEFRIENDERS WELCOMES REV. JONALU JOHNSTONE TO OUR MERRY BAND.
IMPORTANT NOTES: Ginny King. long-time member of our church, is dying from a very aggressive form of lung cancer. Her family wishes that our church know they are so grateful to those who have sent cards of well-wishes and to those who have already visited with her. Her daughter, Becky, is so amazed at the love we have shown Ginny over the years. The family has asked that there be no further visitations and cards are always welcome. Becky and Ginny’s son, Jason, read the cards aloud to her daily. Her address is 1225 Lakeshore Dr. Apt 325 Edmond 73013
Henry Staat, long-time member of our church, died at home from a long battle with cancer. His wife, Jan, has asked that folks not visit and cards of well-wishes and empathy would be wonderful. Their address is 2226 Forister Ct. Norman 73069 (Read his obituary here.)

Befrienders relies upon donations. Those donations are used to provide cards, stamps, and items for memorial receptions. If you wish to make a donation, please send a check and put Befrienders on the purpose line of your check. Thank you.
Befrienders is ready to assist members of our church who are recovering from surgeries or illnesses by offering cards of well-wishes, meal trains, transportation to church or medical appointments as well as arranging for visitations, and we provide the receptions following memorial services.
Befrienders have teams assigned for specific roles.
- Lana Henson leads our Cards of Well Wishes team and can always use extra hands to write cards to our members who are ill or who are recovering from surgeries.
- Ginny Boykin leads our Memorial Receptions team. She calls on folks to bring food for the receptions.
- Patti Kate leads our Transportation team and is looking for folks to be added to her list of people willing to be drivers for anyone needing a ride to a doctor’s appointment, therapy appointment, etc. She is actively recruiting for folks to be on her team.
- Kathy Nyswonger leads our Visitation team. She, along with others, actively go out and visit with members who are unable to get to church or some of the social events. She is actively recruiting for folks to be on her team.
- Meal Trains – we don’t have a team leader yet for this team of people willing to step up and provide a meal to an individual or family. Much of the work of the leader is organizing the Meal Train on line. If you are interested, please contact Susan Bishop for more info,
If you are interested in joining any of these teams, please let Susan Bishop know at sdbishop50@gmail.com.

Change for Change
For the month of November our Change for Change partner is VOICE.
CHANGE FOR CHANGE needs your help. Did you know that anyone can suggest a worthy local non-profit in our community? Do you know how?
- Check out the 1uc.org website and click on the justice tab
- Then click on Community Partnerships and click on the application in green in the middle of the page.
- Submit the application to Deborah Shinn or Anne Murray, or leave it in the office Social Justice mailbox. Or you can email the completed application to them. They be found in Breeze.
WE APPRECIATE IT WHEN CONGREGANTS NOMINATE WORTHY COMMUNITY PARTNERS. THANK YOU!
NEWS FROM THE SOCIAL JUSTICE COUNCIL: 1UC’S CURBSIDE PANTRY needs donations. When you attend services or activities at church, please bring a can or other non-perishable food item and place it in our pantry along Dewey St. If you can’t bring food, consider making a financial donation to the pantry instead. We have a very helpful elf who does the shopping.
Also, Nov 5th is Election Day. If you haven’t already voted, make sure you do before the sun sets! This election is critical to the future of our democracy.
TURKISH FESTIVAL SCHEDULED: Join other UU’s as we engage with our Muslim siblings at the Turkish Raindrop House November 2nd 10-4p. There will be gifts to purchase and lots of great food to eat! Come and break pita bread together with our Muslim neighbors.
NEWS FROM UUSC (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee)
UUSC funding allowed our partner Fundación San Alonso Rodríguez (FSAR) to complete eleven self-constructed homes in two Tolupan villages in Honduras.
FSAR’s work on environmental protection and land preservation goes hand-in-hand with the human right to housing. Each new house built advances the culture and dignity of Indigenous communities in Honduras. These family homes ensure more tightly knit communities, providing a sacred and shared space, inviting all to Encuentro La Milpa, or “enter the cornfield.”
In the words of our partner, the land and homes are like a cornfield space “where the dreams of the family, of the community organization, are woven; where lived reality is addressed: problems and concerns, challenges, and hopes.” La Milpa is “the people’s struggle against extractive projects, against agroindustry, against invasive products. La Milpa means a political fight to make us people in freedom.”
NEWS FROM THE CENTER FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: On November 5, millions of people will have the opportunity to weigh in on the future of abortion access across the United States. The stakes for our rights and freedoms couldn't be higher. Today, 77 million people live under state abortion bans. Oklahoma is under a near-total abortion ban. This is not the future we deserve, and we can change it—starting with your vote on November 5.
NEWS FROM THE OK POLICY INSTITUTE: Black Youth Are Invested in their Communities but Encounter Barriers to Voting
The civic participation of Black youth in recent years has been complex, with both bright spots and challenges. For example, young Black women, alongside other young women of color, have often been at the forefront of activism and civic action. But Black youth, and especially young Black men, have voted at lower rates and remain underrepresented in the electorate. This analysis of Black youth ages 18-34 who participated in our 2024 pre-election poll re-emphasizes that Black youth are not a monolith regarding civic engagement. They possess a wide range of motivations, ideas, and perceptions about the electoral and civic process. A better understanding of these dynamics can help us support their participation and eliminate inequities in voter turnout. [Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement]

Intersex Awareness Day: Understanding and Celebrating Diversity
Every October 26, Intersex Awareness Day brings attention to intersex people and their experiences. Intersex individuals are born with physical sex characteristics that don’t fit typical definitions of male or female bodies. Intersex Awareness Day invites us to broaden our understanding of human diversity and challenges societal norms that often overlook or misrepresent intersex people.
Celebrating Intersex Awareness Day is an opportunity to advocate for the rights of intersex individuals, including their right to bodily autonomy and freedom from unnecessary medical procedures. It’s also a time to learn about intersex history, culture, and the ongoing efforts to improve legal protections for intersex people worldwide.
Let’s celebrate Intersex Awareness Day by committing to inclusivity and educating ourselves on intersex experiences. For more information, visit Intersex Society of North America: https://isna.org/
