New Issue
Our November issue is out next week!
Our November issue covers such a broad range of topics that we’re pretty confident you’ll land on an article or news story that resonates with you.
A parent? A must-read is our article on smartphones and childhood. We speak with a local tech expert and a behavioural scientist to learn more about the dangers of unfettered access to these digital devices and the research being conducted to help inform future policy in the UK.
A running pro, or perhaps wanting to get started? You’ll want to check out our article on running, where we speak with local groups that offer free group runs for every pace, along with the much-needed encouragement and motivation that we need as we hit the winter months.
Love cooking? We’ve got a couple of features that we think you will love, including an mouthwatering recipe from national treasure Dame Mary Berry.
Passionate about skincare and beauty? We meet a luxury Bath-based brand to learn more about their clean beauty products and exclusive facial treatments that promise to offer you glowing skin in time for the festive season. We also share some of our top picks for beauty advent calendars.
None of the above whet your appetite? Fret not, because there’s so much more, including features on history, upcoming theatre productions, local interest stories, and our usual round-up of must-attend events.
So, as usual, keep an eye out as the mags will land in cafés, restaurants, shops, cultural venues and on doormats across the city next week.
In the meantime, catch up on our October issue here.

Self Service
Self Service is in our opinion one of the half dozen or so truly heavyweight fashion magazines – in this case literally so, being a bookish, hardcover 3kg tome. It follows the current trend for themed releases, although it usually tags along without imagination or innovation. However, the Autumn/Winter 2025 issue out this week does break new ground to address something long overdue – a homage to Belgian talent and achievement in the fashion world, given how disproportionately Belgians are distributed through all levels of the industry. The three covers feature actor and comedian Benoit Poelvoorde, model Tijs van der Gun and one non-Belgian – model, actress and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty's latest brand ambassador, Loli Bahia.

Review: Death on the Nile at Theatre Royal Bath
"For those who don’t know the plot, a collection of well-heeled individuals gather in the British Museum to celebrate the return of a precious sarcophagus to the Egyptian government before taking to a luxury paddle steamer to escort said sarcophagus on its return journey down the Nile. But what with Hercule Poirot on the guest list and his fellow cruise companions being laden with all manner of complicated inter-personal wranglings, we know that we’re setting sail for troubled waters."

Transition Bath presents Green Screen: Power Station (12A) + Discussion, 30 October
Inspired by lockdown mutual aid initiatives, artist-activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn decided to turn their street into an energy-generating powerhouse – a prototype for a new way of living, with the hope of galvanising a wider push towards sustainable alternatives.
Directed by the duo, POWER STATION charts their turbulent journey, from pitching the idea to their neighbours and sleeping on the roof of their home to raising finance and launching a bid for a Christmas number one single.
By turns funny and heartwarming, Powell and Edelstyn’s film is a vibrant portrait of their local neighbourhood, and a charming testament to the power of art in changing minds about what could be possible.

The ‘van with a plan’ hits the road – have your say on our Local Plan Options consultation
|
|
|
|
|
People are being encouraged to look out for ‘the van with a plan’ when it stops off at more than 50 locations over the coming weeks as part of a significant public consultation on growth plans, which could reshape Bath & North East Somerset over the next 20 years.
Locations varying from high streets, garden centres and Bath city centre locations to pub car parks, colleges and industrial estates are on the van’s route - all in a bid to raise awareness of the council’s consultation and to give everyone a chance to have their say.
The Local Plan Options consultation focuses on new housing, transport, business space, infrastructure and public spaces. It started on October 3 and runs until 14 November.
The Local Plan Options report responds to the government’s new housing targets and the growth agenda with detailed options that could shape better places and create more jobs for the future.
Having consulted last year on an earlier ambitious target of 14,000 new homes over twenty years the council has reset its Local Plan Options after the government doubled the target to 27,000 over eighteen years.
The Local Plan Options report outlines how places might change over the next 20 years to provide more of the right homes in the right places and enable economic growth. The report sets out how growth could be planned for, to create sustainable communities, protect the district’s unique character and address the climate and ecological emergency.

Inaugural Giving Day at King Edward’s School
|
|
|
|
|
The first ever Giving Day at King Edward’s School, Bath, which brought together pupils, staff, parents, Old Edwardians and supporters in a joyful celebration of the KES community’s spirit and generosity, has raised an extraordinary £126,287 to support the School’s means-tested Bursary Programme and two new outdoor spaces for learning and wellbeing.
Giving Day saw the whole school community come together to take part in celebratory events, from a Danceathon at the Pre-Prep and talent shows, quizzes and carnival-style games at the Junior School, to an ‘It’s a Knockout’ race at the Senior School , where members of staff donned inflatable animal costumes to the delight of pupils. Across the whole school everyone endeavoured to run, hike or row 1,552 miles in honour of the School’s founding year (1552). Also proving hugely popular was the Headmaster’s Challenge, which saw him face 126 football penalties whilst in goal! The School also saw its largest ever collection for Bath Foodbank, with well over the target of 1,552 items donated by the KES community. The day ended with the Wroughton Lecture given by Old Edwardian, Natalie Hewit, who spoke about the making of her film, Endurance, which tells of the discovery of the wreck of Shackleton’s famous ship in Antarctica. The £126,287 raised will go towards the School’s means-tested Bursary Programme and two outdoor projects that will see a new outdoor classroom for Pre-Prep and Junior pupils located near the Junior School and a wellbeing and social space installed outside the Senior School’s new Academic and Pastoral Building which is opening after half term.
