Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Freedom
to Worship”
Aim: Review
the
pivotal
role of Darius in getting the new Temple built in Jerusalem;
Ponder
excuses
we offer for failing to act in accord with God’s will;
and Confess
our
failings before God, receive the joy of forgiveness, and get on with
the task at hand.
Background:
Ezra 5;
6:1-12;
10:1-5
Bible Lesson:
Ezra
6:1-12
Memory
Verse:
“And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there
destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter
[and] to destroy this house of God which [is] at Jerusalem. I Darius
have made a decree; let it be done with speed.” Ezra
6:12 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study shows
God’s sovereignty as He
uses unexpected
people to fulfill His Will.
First Babylon is used by God to discipline the
Jews for their idolatry and
disobedience by taking them into captivity. God allows Persia to
overthrow Babylon. Then
Cyrus the Persian ruler allows the
Jews to return to Jerusalem
with the objective
of rebuilding their Temple, after 70 years of bondage. Zerubbabel
leads a large contingency of the Israelites to rebuild the Temple.
The rebuilding effort begins and meets opposition from a variety of
folks. The rebuilding
project is halted when
Tatnai, a
regional governor, questions
the project and sends an
inquiry to Darius the
current ruler of Persia regarding whether
the Israelites have the authority to rebuild the Temple. Our lesson
opens with Darius addressing this challenge to the rebuilding
project.
-
Ezra
6:1-4,
Resurrected Decree: King
Darius uses his authority to order a search of the Babylonian
archives for information regarding the rebuilding project in
Jerusalem. The information was found in
an unexpected area, a province captured King Cyrus and used as a
residence. King Cyrus’ decree substantiated the Jews’ permission
to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. It further described the
function of the Temple for offering their sacrifices on the same
site as the original Temple was
located before it was
destroyed by the Babylonian when
they conquered
the Jews in Jerusalem. The dimensions of the Temple were even
recorded in the decree.
The expenses of the rebuilding project was to be generously funded
from the Persian treasury.
-
Ezra
6:5-7,
Restored Protection: As
a bonus to the permission to rebuild the Temple, the gold and silver
cups, that were taken by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzer from the
Temple of God in Jerusalem were to be given
to the Jews so that they
could be returned to their
rightful location in Jerusalem. King Darius added to the
confirmation of the Jews’ permission to rebuild, the prohibition
of Tatnai, governor of the region and his colleagues to interfere
with the rebuilding effort. They were forbidden to disturb or hinder
the efforts of the Jews to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem.
-
Ezra
6:8-12,
Renew Resources: King
Darius decreed that those under his rule should assist elders of the
Jews in the rebuilding of the Temple of God. They were also to pay
the full construction cost and their payment was to be expeditious
and to be
taken from the tax revenues collected in the province west of the
Euphrates River such that there would be no delay in the work due to
a shortage
of funds. Besides financial resources, they were to provided
everything
the priests
needed including young bulls, rams, and male lambs for the burnt
offerings to the God of heaven. The
daily supply of wheat, salt, wine, and olive oil was also to be
provided. The provision of these items for sacrifices to the God of
heaven along prayers for the welfare of the king and his sons were
desired by King Darius. King Darius stipulated that violators of his
decree would forfeit their property and their lives. The
home of violators would be
demolished
and the violators would be
executed.
Beyond the
punishment outlined,
he expect the God of the Jewish people to destroy any king or nation
who violated
his decree and destroys the Temple.
Take
Aways:
-
We
don’t know who God will use to fulfill His Will, because He is
Sovereign. He does what He wants, when He
wants,
how He
wants,
and
where
He
wants.
-
We
need to reexamine our excuses for not doing God’s Will … being
out of God’s Will can
have
dire consequences.
-
God’s
Mercy and Forgiveness are
so sweet and refreshing!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“I
was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the
LORD. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.” Psalms
122:1-2 KJV
“O
come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our
maker.” Psalms
95:6 KJV
“O
come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the
rock of our salvation.” Psalms
95:1 KJV
“But
the LORD [is] in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence
before him.” Habakkuk 2:20 KJV
“O
give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good; for his mercy [endureth]
for ever.” 1 Chronicles
16:34 KJV
