I've been reading a lot of nonfiction recently in my role as a business coach. When I do read fiction, I prefer genre fiction with happy endings!

For those who graduated from college quite a while ago and aren't up on some of the new terminology and thinking on racism, this is a great place to start. Kendi convinced me to expand my thinking of racism from just statements/acts by single people to understanding how systems can be racist in that they generate racist outcomes. I don't agree with everything he says (I'm still a supporter of democracy), but it was a great view into how the view of racism is evolving.

I enjoy Scifi,Thrillers and the occasional Non-Fiction. (If it's Scifi related. And thrilling.)

I love mysteries & thrillers, police procedurals, and psychological mysteries. I also love well written southern fiction set in the early to late 1900's.

This is not a book I would normally read but even though it was dark and gritty and more of a man’s read, I am definitely glad I picked it up. It is a classic crime thriller with heart that will literally take you on the ride of your life. This sad realistic story reminiscent of heist films from the 70s is about Beauregard (Bug) Montage, a man desperate to hold on to the honest life he was finally living. An honest life he wanted to keep so his wife and children would not have to suffer like he had, living with an outlaw Dad. In order to do this he reverts to his former life – the life he had sworn to give up to when he was finally able to put money down on his own garage. One bad break after another and he was on the verge of losing his garage and his respectability. He was desperate so he took one last job as a getaway driver. The writing is fabulous. It would have to be for me to actually enjoy reading all about fast cars, driving and racing. Bug is portrayed in such a convincing way that you can’t help but root for him even when you hate him for what he is doing. Fans of Ocean’s Eleven, Elmore Leonard, and Breaking Bad will love this southern noir classic.

Wow, I think Alice Feeney has written her best book yet. A story of love and betrayal and revenge is told from two viewpoints his and hers. Tension begins to build from the first page and it doesn't let up until the very end. While the story is told from two viewpoints we also have a third person the narrator, who is obviously the killer. Every time the narrator starts talking about why someone had to die I am convinced I know who the killer is, until the next time when I'm sure it's someone else. I really was not surprised at the ending until I found out it wasn't really the end. This is one book that you won't want to miss.

Aimee Sinclair was taught at an early age to become a good actor. As a child being a good actor meant surviving and pleasing her Mum, as an adult it meant having a career and fooling her husband so he wouldn’t hurt her too much. We meet Aimee Sinclair when she arrives home from a day on set of her newest film and finds that her husband has disappeared. Aimee has spent so many years – from the time she was 6 - pretending to be someone else and trying to forget the truly horrible things that have happened to her that she begins to believe maybe she did something to hurt her husband, because after all he deserved it. Alice Feeny certainly didn’t suffer from sophomore slump when she wrote I Know Who You Are. It is a psychological thriller that takes a stunning look at how tragic events affect people, especially children, and how the mind adapts in different ways in order to survive. You may think you know what is happening and why but don’t bet on it.

Three points of view, three really different and very flawed characters, a small town with horrible secrets all contributed to one of the best books I have read this year. It is a gut wrenching crime thriller that will shock you more than once as you race through to see how it ends. Then you will want to go back and read it again to savor the beautiful writing and to really understand each of the amazing characters.

Robert Pobi has written another heart stopping, adrenaline fueled thriller. Dr. Lucas Page once again is talked into helping the FBI – this time to see who is setting off bombs and killing hundreds of people all over NYC. Once again Lucas uses his uncanny memory and special math skills as he tries to analyze data, numbers, and all sorts of unrelated facts about the bombings and the victims to come up with some kind of pattern to figure out who is behind the bombings. Once again he is obnoxious to his co-workers and anyone who he thinks is beneath his intelligence (which means almost everyone) and once again he puts himself in unbelievable danger. There is lots of bloodshed and the killing of many innocent people, there is lots of black humor, there is non-stop action and there is just the slightest softening of Lucas Page as a person. Lots of books are listed as thrillers but few fill the bill as well as Under Pressure does.

Just because you love someone with all of your heart does not mean they love you back or are even worthy of your love. Tabitha is very young and naïve when she first meets Connor and falls madly in love with him. But she is older and shouldn’t be so naïve (considering what happened with her first husband) when Connor comes back into her life years later. But, obviously in Tabitha’s case love is truly blind. The diary entry at the beginning of the book from Connor’s extremely rich dead wife sets the stage for an intriguing domestic thriller that will have you wishing you could just tell Tabitha to run!

The remote coast of New Zealand and the small town of Gold Cover were the perfect setting for exploring how well people really know each other and what secrets they are hiding when a popular, well liked, and beautiful young girl goes missing. Will Gallagher, the police chief, is an outsider who is happy with his demotion and banishment to this small town because he believes he failed in his last case. Anahera Rawiri is a Maori native who left town as soon as she became an adult, only to return 8 years later to try and find solace after her life in London is shattered. Who knew there could be so many people in such a small town with so many secrets? Beautiful writing, interesting characters, and edge of your seat suspense in a setting that is wild, dangerous and unpredictable! What could be better?

Dr. Ruth Hartland is a well-respected psychodynamic therapist who has practiced for over 20 years. However, as the story of her family is slowly revealed it is obvious that she has not been as successful dealing with her husband and children as she has with her patients. Her marriage has come apart, her daughter Caroline has moved to Australia and they rarely speak and worst of all Caroline’s twin Tom, whom Ruth has always seemed to favor, disappeared two years earlier at the age of 17 without a trace. When Ruth is assigned a new patient, a young man who closely resembles Tom, she knows she should refer him to a colleague but she has never told any of them that her son is missing. She convinces herself that she can help this young man. Perhaps as a way of dealing with her guilt of not being a good enough mother to Tom. Thus begins a spiral of events that are soon out of Ruth’s control. A Good Enough Mother is a deeply insightful story of a mother who always wants more for her child in the name of love, and how this may not always be for the best. It is a fascinating story that takes you inside the world of therapist and patient.

I love the faster pacing of books written for a younger audience (middle grade and young adult), but will try just about anything fiction, especially if it has some romance. I also have a soft spot for really special picture books.

Fie is next in line to be chief of her Crow clan. At the bottom of the magical and political hierarchy, the Crows' only use is to rid communities of their plague dead. But now that their newest haul is royal -- live royals -- the balance of power has shifted. Fie must use all her cunning and strength to smuggle the prince away from a murderous court, while trying her best to ignore the emotion she refuses to feel for the prince's guard. Readers of Children of Blood and Bone will love the world building and magical system, and the girl who comes into her own as a leader in the midst of it all.

I love historical fiction, with World War II fiction usually topping my list of favorites. I also love YA contemporaries, mysteries, and adore anything having to do with musical theatre.

It's a story of strength of spirit and survival against all odds. A powerful look into the horrors of codependency and toxic love told against the backdrop of a wild 1960's Alaska, The Great Alone is unforgettable. It's a book of love, in all of its forms - beautiful, toxic, romantic, platonic, familial. It's about the strength of a community and the love between a mother and a daughter, and it explores falling in love when you aren't sure that you know what real love is. It made me smile, made me angry, and made me think - sometimes all at once.

I enjoy nonfiction the most: biographies, true crime, sociology, and civil rights narratives to name a few. When I read fiction, I choose historical novels or literary fiction most often.

In this honest and raw memoir, Trethewey remembers her upbringing as the daughter of an interracial couple in the segregated South. She also recounts the time surrounding her mother's murder at the hands of her stepfather. It's a chilling reminder that although abused women can be diligent about protecting themselves from their perpetrators, the law cannot always provide a means of escape.

The Bicycle Man is a moving story about a teenage boy who has his own paper route as his comes of age in the late 60s near Richmond, VA. As he scans the headlines every morning—bombings in Vietnam, assassinations of US leaders, rockets heading into space—he has some help processing it from those he meets along the way, especially the old African American man he meets with a bicycle of his own. Author Deans causes those of us of a certain age to be reminded of the tragedies of the past, and remember our own 'bicycle men' who softened the blows and molded our futures.

There are no limits to what I love to read, however I tend to gravitate to mystery/thriller action stories that are fast paced with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is nothing I love more than an ending that comes completely out of left field that I never saw coming.

This is a relentless story that starts fast and accelerates to an action packed end. I've been in a bit of a reading rut, and was wondering if it was me. It wasn't. When I got hold of Stan Parish's Love and Theft and was introduced to Alex, a world class Jewel thief, and his dangerous world, I was instantly hooked. Alex has met a woman he things might be 'the one' and has finally decided he is done with his secret life. Unfortunately for Alex, powerful underworld characters are in need of his skills and have employed the ultimate incentive to enlist his services. This book has a fabulous and thrilling story with rich and complex characters and settings. An outstanding read.

Down and out and nearing rock bottom, Scot Harvath is drowning the recent loss of his wife in a flood of booze in a Key West neighborhood bar. Not able to ignore his true nature, he steps in to help the barmaid as two thugs begin to abuse her. He takes thugs outside to apply some Harvath Justice only to find himself staring down the silenced gun of a highly paid assassin. If not for the heroics of his former team, it would have been the end. His team has learned that a contract has been put on Scot's life that threatens not just him, but all who are close to him. From there we are launched into a non-stop race to stop the killers and find out the source of this contract. The pace and action is non-stop from there until the very end. Scot Harvath is back, and more intense, visceral and violent than ever, because this time, it's personal. Brad Thor is at the top of his game!

This is a thriller of the highest order with some twists and turns that will have you scratching your head. Some very creative writing will stop you dead in your tracks at one point with a total "Wait, What???" moment, that may even force you to backtrack a few chapters just to see how you didn't see that one coming. It's a new take on the concept delivered by Stephen King's classic "Misery" from some years ago, but with some very different twists and turns. This book makes for some exciting and compelling reading and should definitely be added to your summer reading list!

I enjoy suspense, complex political plots, psychological thrillers, really any good mystery. I also enjoy southern historical novels, especially those set in Appalachia as well as regency romance.

I love to read fast-paced thrillers that take you on a wild ride with twists and turns and surprise endings!! But, I also love a good novel, with great characters and a rich and bold plot.

This captivating page-turner begins with a fire at an advertising agency on the coast south of London resulting in a death, and then proceeds with the events that led to this fire. In the aftermath, the lives of three ambitious women, with strong motives, are torn apart as they attempt to untangle the webs of deceit each has created, while being suspected of murder. Secrets and lies have bridled these women, and regrets, anger, and insecurities are boiling in each, as this fast-paced thriller reaches its high point, leaving us with its surprising ending.

I was hooked on the first page, and riveted throughout. This is a story of love and lies, and a story of deceit and betrayal. An investigative reporter goes undercover at a big pharmaceutical company to expose a wonder drug to help women conceive. But what else does this wonder drug do? Many twists and turns unfold, as she attempts to expose this company, and bring this captivating story to its surprise ending.

And, so begins this powerful novel about motherhood and the feelings of inadequacy many young moms have as they attempt to juggle children, husbands, and careers. It's fast-paced, with a twisty, surprise ending.
