Suffrage: Women's Long Battle for the Vote by Ellen Carol Dubois

Honoring the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the Constitution, this exciting history explores the full scope of the movement to win the vote for women through portraits of its bold leaders and devoted activists.

Distinguished historian Ellen Carol DuBois begins in the pre-Civil War years with foremothers Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Sojourner Truth as she explores the links of the woman suffrage movement to the abolition of slavery. After the Civil War, Congress granted freed African American men the right to vote but not white and African American women, a crushing disappointment. DuBois shows how suffrage leaders persevered through the Jim Crow years into the reform era of Progressivism. She introduces new champions Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul, who brought the fight into the 20th century, and she shows how African American women, led by Ida B. Wells-Barnett, demanded voting rights even as white suffragists ignored them.

DuBois explains how suffragists built a determined coalition of moderate lobbyists and radical demonstrators in forging a strategy of winning voting rights in crucial states to set the stage for securing suffrage for all American women in the Constitution. In vivid prose DuBois describes suffragists’ final victories in Congress and state legislatures, culminating in the last, most difficult ratification, in Tennessee.

DuBois follows women’s efforts to use their voting rights to win political office, increase their voting strength, and pass laws banning child labor, ensuring maternal health, and securing greater equality for women.

Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote is sure to become the authoritative account of one of the great episodes in the history of American democracy.

Before She Was Helen by Caroline B. Cooney

Pre-order by 8/21 for a signed, personalized copy of Before She Was Helen by Caroline B. Cooney. Personalization requests should be noted in the comments box during checkout.

Before She Was Helen was a fun, quirky, almost slapstick story about senior citizens living in a retirement community in SC and what happens when Helen does a good deed and goes into a neighbor’s condo to make sure he is all right. When a dead body turns up a few days later Helen really has problems as she found something strange during her search for her neighbor and she is afraid that she will finally have to reveal the truth about who she was before she was Helen. While the book seems to be light and frivolous and is quick read there are some serious issues that haunt Helen. After all things just weren’t done the same way in the 50’s when Helen was a teenager. Helen has a lot of secrets and she wants to keep them. I really loved Helen’s grit and determination and the way she interacted with her neighbors and couldn’t wait to see if Helen could stay Helen. - Nancy M., store volunteer

The Boys' Club by Erica Katz

Alex Vogel has always been a high achiever who lived her life by the book—star student and athlete in high school, prelaw whiz in college, Harvard Law School degree. Accepting a dream offer at the prestigious Manhattan law firm of Klasko & Fitch, she promises her sweet and supportive longtime boyfriend that the job won’t change her.

Yet Alex is seduced by the firm’s money and energy . . . and by her cocksure male colleagues, who quickly take notice of the new girl. She’s never felt so confident and powerful—even the innuendo-laced banter with clients feels fun. In the firm’s most profitable and competitive division, Mergers and Acquisitions, Alex works around the clock, racking up billable hours and entertaining clients late into the evening. While the job is punishing, it has its perks, like a weekend trip to Miami, a ride in a client’s private jet, and more expense-account meals than she can count.

But as her clients’ expectations and demands on her increase, and Alex finds herself magnetically drawn to a handsome coworker despite her loving relationship at home, she begins to question everything—including herself. She knows the corporate world isn’t black and white, and that to reach the top means playing by different rules. But who made those rules? And what if the system rigged so that women can’t win, anyway?

When something happens that reveals the dark reality of the firm, Alex comes to understand the ways women like her are told—explicitly and implicitly—how they need to behave to succeed in the workplace. Now, she can no longer stand by silently—even if doing what’s right means putting everything on the line to expose the shocking truth.

The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

The author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Orphan Train returns with an ambitious, emotionally resonant historical novel that captures the hardship, oppression, opportunity and hope of a trio of women’s lives—two English convicts and an orphaned Aboriginal girl — in nineteenth-century Australia.

Seduced by her employer’s son, Evangeline, a naïve young governess in early nineteenth-century London, is discharged when her pregnancy is discovered and sent to the notorious Newgate Prison. After months in the fetid, overcrowded jail, she learns she is sentenced to “the land beyond the seas,” Van Diemen’s Land, a penal colony in Australia. Though uncertain of what awaits, Evangeline knows one thing: the child she carries will be born on the months-long voyage to this distant land.

During the journey on a repurposed slave ship, the Medea, Evangeline strikes up a friendship with Hazel, a girl little older than her former pupils who was sentenced to seven years transport for stealing a silver spoon. Canny where Evangeline is guileless, Hazel—a skilled midwife and herbalist—is soon offering home remedies to both prisoners and sailors in return for a variety of favors.

Though Australia has been home to Aboriginal people for more than 50,000 years, the British government in the 1840s considers its fledgling colony uninhabited and unsettled, and views the natives as an unpleasant nuisance. By the time the Medea arrives, many of them have been forcibly relocated, their land seized by white colonists. One of these relocated people is Mathinna, the orphaned daughter of the Chief of the Lowreenne tribe, who has been adopted by the new governor of Van Diemen’s Land.

In this gorgeous novel, Christina Baker Kline brilliantly recreates the beginnings of a new society in a beautiful and challenging land, telling the story of Australia from a fresh perspective, through the experiences of Evangeline, Hazel, and Mathinna. While life in Australia is punishing and often brutally unfair, it is also, for some, an opportunity: for redemption, for a new way of life, for unimagined freedom. Told in exquisite detail and incisive prose, The Exiles is a story of grace born from hardship, the unbreakable bonds of female friendships, and the unfettering of legacy.

In The Valley: Stories and a Novella Based on SERENA by Ron Rash - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

From bestselling and award-winning writer Ron Rash ("One of the great American authors at work today."—The New York Times) comes a collection of ten searing stories and the return of the villainess who propelled Serena to national acclaim, in a long-awaited novella.

Ron Rash has long been a revered presence in the landscape of American letters. A virtuosic novelist, poet, and story writer, he evokes the beauty and brutality of the land, the relentless tension between past and present, and the unquenchable human desire to be a little bit better than circumstances would seem to allow (to paraphrase Faulkner).

In these ten stories, Rash spins a haunting allegory of the times we live in—rampant capitalism, the severing of ties to the natural world in the relentless hunt for profit, the destruction of body and soul with pills meant to mute our pain—and yet within this world he illuminates acts of extraordinary decency and heroism. Two of the stories have already been singled out for accolades: "Baptism" was chosen by Roxane Gay for inclusion in The Best American Short Stories 2018, and "Neighbors" was selected by Jonathan Lethem for The Best American Mystery Stories 2019. And in revisiting Serena Pemberton, Rash updates his bestselling parable of greed run amok as his deliciously vindictive heroine returns to the North Carolina wilderness she left scarred and desecrated to make one final effort to kill the child that threatens all she has accomplished.

"A gorgeous, brutal writer" (Richard Price) working at the height of his powers, Ron Rash has created another mesmerizing look at the imperfect world around us.

How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

For those who graduated from college quite a while ago and aren't up on some of the new terminology and thinking on racism, this is a great place to start. Kendi convinced me to expand my thinking of racism from just statements/acts by single people to understanding how systems can be racist in that they generate racist outcomes. I don't agree with everything he says (I'm still a supporter of democracy), but it was a great view into how the view of racism is evolving.

In the aftermath of a second American revolution, peace rests on a fragile truce. The old regime has been deposed, but the ex-president has vanished, escaping justice for his crimes. As the factions in Washington work to restore order, Donny Kimoe is in court to settle old scores—and pay his own debts come due.

Meanwhile, the rebels Donny once defended are exacting their own kind of justice. To do that, Donny must betray his clients’ secrets. Including one explosive secret hidden in the ruins, the discovery of which could extinguish the last hope for a better tomorrow—or, if Donny plays it right, keep it burning.

The Trial and Execution of the Traitor George Washington : A Novel by Charles Rosenberg

A thought-provoking novel that imagines what would have happened if the British had succeeded in kidnapping General George Washington.

British special agent Jeremiah Black, an officer of the King’s Guard, lands on a lonely beach in the wee hours of the morning in late November 1780. The revolution is in full swing but has become deadlocked. Black is here to change all that.

His mission, aided by Loyalists, is to kidnap George Washington and spirit him back to London aboard the HMS Peregrine, a British sloop of war that is waiting closely offshore. Once he lands, though, the “aid by Loyalists” proves problematic because some would prefer just to kill the general outright. Black manages—just—to get Washington aboard the Peregrine, which sails away.

Upon their arrival in London, Washington is imprisoned in the Tower to await trial on charges of high treason. England’s most famous barristers seek to represent him but he insists on using an American. He chooses Abraham Hobhouse, an American-born barrister with an English wife—a man who doesn’t really need the work and thinks the “career-building” case will be easily resolved through a settlement of the revolution and Washington’s release. But as greater political and military forces swirl around them and peace seems ever more distant, Hobhouse finds that he is the only thing keeping Washington from the hangman’s noose.

Drawing inspiration from a rumored kidnapping plot hatched in 1776 by a member of Washington’s own Commander-in-Chief Guard, Charles Rosenberg has written a compelling novel that envisions what would take place if the leader of America’s fledgling rebellion were taken from the nation at the height of the war, imperiling any chance of victory.

Blacktop Wasteland by S. A. Cosby

This is not a book I would normally read but even though it was dark and gritty and more of a man’s read, I am definitely glad I picked it up. It is a classic crime thriller with heart that will literally take you on the ride of your life. This sad realistic story reminiscent of heist films from the 70s is about Beauregard (Bug) Montage, a man desperate to hold on to the honest life he was finally living. An honest life he wanted to keep so his wife and children would not have to suffer like he had, living with an outlaw Dad. In order to do this he reverts to his former life – the life he had sworn to give up to when he was finally able to put money down on his own garage. One bad break after another and he was on the verge of losing his garage and his respectability. He was desperate so he took one last job as a getaway driver. The writing is fabulous. It would have to be for me to actually enjoy reading all about fast cars, driving and racing. Bug is portrayed in such a convincing way that you can’t help but root for him even when you hate him for what he is doing. Fans of Ocean’s Eleven, Elmore Leonard, and Breaking Bad will love this southern noir classic.

His & Hers by Alice Feeney

Wow, I think Alice Feeney has written her best book yet. A story of love and betrayal and revenge is told from two viewpoints his and hers. Tension begins to build from the first page and it doesn't let up until the very end. While the story is told from two viewpoints we also have a third person the narrator, who is obviously the killer. Every time the narrator starts talking about why someone had to die I am convinced I know who the killer is, until the next time when I'm sure it's someone else. I really was not surprised at the ending until I found out it wasn't really the end. This is one book that you won't want to miss.

I Know Who You Are by Alice Feeney

Aimee Sinclair was taught at an early age to become a good actor. As a child being a good actor meant surviving and pleasing her Mum, as an adult it meant having a career and fooling her husband so he wouldn’t hurt her too much. We meet Aimee Sinclair when she arrives home from a day on set of her newest film and finds that her husband has disappeared. Aimee has spent so many years – from the time she was 6 - pretending to be someone else and trying to forget the truly horrible things that have happened to her that she begins to believe maybe she did something to hurt her husband, because after all he deserved it. Alice Feeny certainly didn’t suffer from sophomore slump when she wrote I Know Who You Are. It is a psychological thriller that takes a stunning look at how tragic events affect people, especially children, and how the mind adapts in different ways in order to survive. You may think you know what is happening and why but don’t bet on it.

Under Pressure by Robert Pobi

Robert Pobi has written another heart stopping, adrenaline fueled thriller. Dr. Lucas Page once again is talked into helping the FBI – this time to see who is setting off bombs and killing hundreds of people all over NYC. Once again Lucas uses his uncanny memory and special math skills as he tries to analyze data, numbers, and all sorts of unrelated facts about the bombings and the victims to come up with some kind of pattern to figure out who is behind the bombings. Once again he is obnoxious to his co-workers and anyone who he thinks is beneath his intelligence (which means almost everyone) and once again he puts himself in unbelievable danger. There is lots of bloodshed and the killing of many innocent people, there is lots of black humor, there is non-stop action and there is just the slightest softening of Lucas Page as a person. Lots of books are listed as thrillers but few fill the bill as well as Under Pressure does.

However, as the story of her family is slowly revealed it is obvious that she has not been as successful dealing with her husband and children as she has with her patients. Her marriage has come apart, her daughter Caroline has moved to Australia and they rarely speak and worst of all Caroline’s twin Tom, whom Ruth has always seemed to favor, disappeared two years earlier at the age of 17 without a trace. When Ruth is assigned a new patient, a young man who closely resembles Tom, she knows she should refer him to a colleague but she has never told any of them that her son is missing. She convinces herself that she can help this young man. Perhaps as a way of dealing with her guilt of not being a good enough mother to Tom. Thus begins a spiral of events that are soon out of Ruth’s control. It's a story of strength of spirit and survival against all odds. A powerful look into the horrors of codependency and toxic love told against the backdrop of a wild 1960's Alaska, The Great Alone is unforgettable. It's a book of love, in all of its forms - beautiful, toxic, romantic, platonic, familial. It's about the strength of a community and the love between a mother and a daughter, and it explores falling in love when you aren't sure that you know what real love is. It made me smile, made me angry, and made me think - sometimes all at once.
