Mudflat Acidification Testing

Seaside Sustainability's Camila Gomez and Rowan Galanis recently performed mudflat acidification testing at Conomo Point in Essex, Massachusetts. With low tide expected to occur around 1:50pm, the two of them arrived at Beach Circle before noon to ensure maximum access to the mudflats. After determining the water temperature and pH of the nearby body of water, they set up 10 quadrants and tested the temperature and pH of 5 points within each quadrant.

Cleanup at Black and White Beaches!

Our Community Coastal Cleanup at Black and White Beaches was a smashing success! Together, our volunteers removed 78 pounds of trash from both beaches and the surrounding area. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us for a morning of sun and service.

    Sustainable Sunscreen Dispensers

Seaside Sustainability is partnering with Raw Elements, a company that produces natural and reef-safe sunscreen products, in order to ensure that sustainable sun protection is accessible to the public. Our in-person team recently checked on the status of the sunscreen dispensers, taking pictures and videos of the dispensers and ensuring they remained stocked and operational. We hope to conduct interviews with beach visitors in the near future, receiving feedback on the dispensers themselves and educating the public about the importance of utilizing reef-safe sunscreen. Ultimately, we aim to expand the presence of these dispensers across Gloucester and Cape Ann beaches.

The State of Land Use in Animal Production: Current Practices and the Need for Change

As our population continues to grow, the demand for resources and land intensifies. This new agricultural landscape places significant pressure on farmers, a cornerstone of our economy. Unfortunately, the current state of the land makes reversing environmental deterioration increasingly challenging.

Read this blog post to learn how to ensure more resilient agricultural systems and a sustainable future for animal production!

    Farming Climate Destruction

Agriculture is critical to human survival. Agriculture not only provides us with the food we need but also provides jobs for millions of people when accounting for the entirety of the supply chain. However, agriculture is standing as one of the biggest threats to our planet, largely because of methane.

Click the link below to learn how small changes can make a huge difference in combating methane emissions!

Help Needed: Looking for Extra Storage Space!

At Seaside, a lot of our projects and activities require tools and equipment. We are looking for a place to store our gear, including our drones and a boat!

We humbly ask that you consider donating some additional storage space so that we can continue serving our community and environment.

If you have extra space to offer, please reach out to our Executive Director, Eric Magers, at magerse@seasidesustainability.org.

We are grateful for your understanding and generosity!

All Aboard the Marine Debris Trawl!

Our team recently embarked on another marine debris trawl, collecting plastics and other harmful debris from the Essex and Annisquam Rivers. Many of these samples were carefully packaged and sent to a lab at the University of New Hampshire for testing and further evaluation. In the past, these tests have revealed more than 500 pieces of microplastics in a single sample, an exceptionally high number. In particular, previous samples contained huge amounts of microfibers from clothing that enter the water supply through washing machines.

    Alewife Brook Channel Clearing

Alewife Brook in Essex is a migratory run for river herring that links the saltwater marshes to the freshwater spawning area of the Chebacco Lake watershed.

The Volunteer Clearing Project is a one-week initiative in partnership with Division of Marine Fisheries, Ipswich River Watershed Association, PIE Rivers Association, and Seaside Sustainability. Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Essex DPW, and the Chebacco Lake & Watershed Association to unclog a pinch point that impedes fish passage. The short stretch just upstream of Apple Street is flat, and aquatic plants clog the channel. To address this issue, we are seeking volunteers to help remove vegetative growth (mostly cattails) in the stream channel to enhance the fall outbound migration as well as next spring’s upstream migration.

Sign up for one or more of eight work sessions! Sessions are Monday through Thursday, August 19 to 22. Morning sessions will be from 9-11:30am, while those in the afternoon will last from 1-3:30pm.

    PixieDrone Debris Collection!

Seaside Sustainability's Camila Gomez and Rowan Galanis took the PixieDrone out to Cripple Cove Landing to clean up the marine debris concentrated in Gloucester Harbor. Although there was a large presence of seaweed at the surface of the water, the team was able to sort through the debris and enter it for data collection. The collected waste included cigarette butts, plastic food packaging, and nurdles.
