Marie-Catherine’s doctoral project aims at understanding how local experiences and perceptions of community participation can support the collaborative identification of strategies to build equitable research partnerships in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The project uses a participatory research design based on the Weight of Evidence, a transformative approach developed by CIET/PRAM members to bring experiential and scientific knowledge into conversation.
The first step of the project is to conduct a literature review to identify factors that can influence the participation of urban communities from low- and middle-income countries in research. The second step is to engage researchers, community-based organizations, and community members in Dhaka through fuzzy cognitive mapping to contextualize the factors previously identified in their own experiences. The third step is to bring all stakeholders together to discuss potential strategies to build a research partnership in Dhaka.
In June 2022, Marie-Catherine visited Bangladesh to meet research partners from BRAC University in Dhaka. Since then, she has been working on her literature review with the support of members from CIET/PRAM. She is currently in the process of selecting articles for the literature review. She hopes to go back to Dhaka in September 2023 to conduct her field work.
