Foreign editions are a funny thing, because I personally feel so removed from them. I have no direct contact with any of my foreign publishing houses, and there’s no consultation or conversation with me about what they’re doing with my books. The publishing houses don’t tag me in social media posts about my books, and I feel very much like I don't exist. (If you squint, you might just be able to make out my name on that French cover…)
And foreign publishers only pay royalties once at the end of the year, which then gets pushed back into the Jan-June royalty statement from my Australian publisher, which I don’t see until October. So it can be up to 18 months after release before I receive my first statement to see how it’s selling. They almost don’t even feel like my books, if I’m honest.
However, with my self-published books, I hope to organise my own foreign translations at some stage, and release them myself into foreign territories. It will be great fun researching those markets and having full control of getting my books into readers’ hands.
