Today's Bible Study Lesson
"Justice and Righteousness Reign”
Aim: Analyze
the
importance of
this
prophesy
for the people of God in Isaiah’s time and today;
Celebrate
the
justice, righteousness, and peace that Jesus brings to God’s
people; and Share
with
others the hope of eternal peace and justice found in Jesus reign.
Background:
Isaiah 9:1-7
Bible Lesson:
Isaiah 9:2-7
Memory
Verse:
“Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there
shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to
order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from
henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform
this.”
Isaiah 9:7 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Isaiah
was a prophet to the Southern Kingdom of Judah for 58 years. He
lived through a very trying period of time when the Babylonian
Empire had defeated Judah. His time as a prophet covered the reigns
of five kings, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, and Manasseh. His
prophesy strongly criticized the sinfulness and unfaithfulness of
the people of Judah. Isaiah continually exhorted the people to trust
and to obey the laws of the only, true, living God. King Ahaz
experienced attacks from Israel and Damascus. Rather than seeking
help from God, he sought help from
and alliance with Assyria. Eventually, the Assyrians invaded Judah
and demanded tribute. King Hezekiah, who succeeded King Ahaz,
rebelled against the Assyrians, but still did not heed Isaiah’s
advice to seek help from God. At the time of our study, Judah is in
dire straits and we find that Isaiah’s prophesy offered hope for
the people.
-
Our
study opens with Isaiah explaining that even though Judah was
experiencing difficult times there was help coming. Isaiah
states that the people who have walked in darkness and have seen a
great light. He
used
the metaphor of darkness and light. Darkness represented
sin and trouble while
light represented
righteousness and salvation.
Judah
was in a sinful and unfaithful state. They had not obeyed God or
followed His laws. This great
light
in Isaiah’s prophesy was a foretelling of the coming of the
Messiah, Jesus. Even
though Isaiah’s prophesy
had not come to reality, he spake it as if it had,
because this
prophesy
came
from God who
would bring it to past.
-
Isaiah’s
prophesy told of an enlarging of the nation which would bring
rejoicing to the people. He compared this level of elation to the
joy of a successful and bountiful harvest or the dividing of the
spoils from
war
by warriors after a successful and victorious battle. This prophesy
also promised deliverance from the bond of slavery to
ruthless oppressors and from their cruel treatment. This deliverance
was also
compared
with the joy felt when God
enabled
Gideon to
lead
the defeat of the Midianites, who menaced the Israelites and would
not even allow
them to
enjoy
the fruits of their hard work and labor in planting and nurturing
crops. The Midianites would wait
until
the Israelites’
harvest
was
ready to be gathered and store to raid and take what should have
been enjoyed by the Israelites. Even beyond rejoicing and
deliverance, Isaiah’s prophesy offered the promise of peace. This
peace was
compared with warriors burning their
blood soaked uniforms and boots because
they
would no longer be
needed
because
of the
peace that
encompassed
the
land after many
years of warfare.
-
Isaiah’s
prophesy moves on to the specifics of the promise of the Messiah who
would be a gift from God. The Messianic reign would
govern the
land.
He would be A Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
and Prince of Peace. The
Messiah would be a
giver of wise and perfect advice, an
All Powerful God who is
able to deliver whatever is
promised or needed, a
loving,
kind father who would provide tender loving care and protection and
finally,
a purveyor of everlasting peace for His people.
-
The
Messiah’s reign would be everlasting with no end. Fairness and
justice would be the order of the day and it was
compared
to the time
of the great
earthly king, King David. This prophesy would
be
realized because the Almighty God had given this prophesy to Isaiah!
What hope, joy, and happiness did this prophesy bring to a people
who at that time could not see a way out of their dire
circumstances. What hope, joy, and happiness is it for us today as
we look to the Second Coming of Our Lord and Savior! Come Lord
Jesus! Amen!
Take
Aways:
-
No
matter how dire or bleak our circumstances may
seem
there is always hope. Christians never go through tough times
without God’s awareness. The
indwelling Holy Spirit provides
comfort and reminds
us of
our
lineage, Children of God!
-
God
is true to His Promises and He has promised never to leave us alone
-
Only
God
is able to give us peace in the midst of trouble. He
is able to provide a
peace that surpasses all human understanding!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Be
anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV
“You
will keep [him] in perfect peace, [Whose] mind [is] stayed [on You],
Because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
“For
his anger [endureth but] a moment; in his favour [is] life: weeping
may endure for a night, but joy [cometh] in the morning.” Psalm
30:5 KJV
“Some
[trust] in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the
name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:7 NKJV
“God
[is] our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1 KJV
“But
the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send
in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
