Explore a film — sometimes popular, sometimes obscure — in each monthly newsletter! With professional baseball set to return, A League of Their Own seemed like the perfect movie to keep the spirit of Women's History Month going past March.
Directed by Penny Marshall and released in 1992, on the surface this is a movie about two sisters from Oregon farm country who join the All American Girl Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) during its first year in 1943. Through those sisters, Dottie and Kit, we meet a terrific ensemble of teammates, as well as Tom Hanks as their manager.
It's also a WWII homefront movie, a crackling comedy, and one of the very few sports movies that's just as much about relationships between women (in this case, friendships and sibling rivalry) as about the play on the field.
Check out Adult Services Librarian John's list of movies, books for all ages, and relics from a bygone era that relate to this film and the continuing story of women in baseball.
