Dear UUCS Members,
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live our lives now and into the unforeseen future. As a congregation, we need to adjust to this new reality.
Our stewardship drive for the 2020-21 fiscal year coincided with the government-mandated lockdown. Although our target total pledge amount was $238,000, we raised a total of $197,400 in pledges. Moreover, we are losing substantial income from our subtenants, as they are not using the facility as a result of the pandemic. Consequently, we are considerably short of our target budget for the coming church year and must make significant cuts to our proposed budget.
The highest expense item in our budget is the rent of our space, which we cannot use during this lockdown period, despite having to pay full rent. We have inquired with the landlord about rent relief. He is not agreeable to reducing the rent, but is agreeable to deferring payments.
The board held a special meeting on April 16th, 2020 to discuss this situation. We unanimously agreed to retain staff levels as they are currently. Additionally, we agreed to form a committee to start the process of searching for an alternate space that we can afford, and also to plan the move once a new space is found. The committee will report its findings back to the board whereupon the results will be shared with the congregation.
The lockdown will almost certainly impact our ability to hold our annual meeting as scheduled in our facility. At this meeting, we need to discuss our emerging budget issues and vote in the new slate for the board. Consequently, the board has voted to organize an online annual meeting. In order to hold this online annual meeting, we need to amend the relevant by-laws and have the congregation vote to change them.
To facilitate the change of our by-laws, we will publish the proposed changes on the UUCS website and will also email the proposed changes to you. Please respond via email with your questions or discussion points. We plan to vote for the by-law changes via absentee ballots. We will mail the absentee ballots to all members and ask that you mail them back to UUCS. We plan to hold a special online congregational meeting on May 31 to count the votes and discuss issues facing the congregation.
These are important decisions facing our congregation. We will need to get the whole congregation’s support in adjusting to the current situation. Please plan to participate by casting your votes and attending the online congregational meeting.
Wishing you all good health and happiness.
