May's longer days and refreshing spring breezes create ideal conditions for outdoor adventures, with bright red poppy fields a hallmark of the Provencal countryside. In addition to nature’s display, May is perfect for a quick break before summer. 

Faire le pont is a French phrase meaning to link a public holiday with a weekend for an extended escape, and May offers many opportunities with several statutory holidays. 

It all starts on May 1 with Labour Day (Fête du Travail) and Fête du Muguet, when bouquets of lily of the valley are given to others, a tradition begun by King Charles IX in 1561. There are additional chances for time off. May 8 is Victoire 1945 (WWII Victory Day in Europe), and Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14. In 2026, Victoria Day is on May 25 after Pentecost Sunday.

For a change of scenery, just beyond the glamour of the Riviera lies a different world: the Southern Alps. Enjoy a scenic drive from Nice to experience the wild beauty and stunning vistas of Haute-Alpes de Provence.

For those interested in cultural excitement, catch the red carpet buzz as the 79th Cannes Film Festival lights up the coast from May 12–23, drawing the world’s gaze to the celebrities.
