Welcome to this edition of Open Outlook, which marks the release of our Annual Review, highlighting our impact across Scotland. 

We're open for registrations for courses starting in October, including Part-Time Fee Grant applications to cover the cost of study for eligible students. 

We're looking forward to the rest of the summer, including supporting key events at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Annual review highlights our impact across Scotland

Inspirational stories of life-changing learning and student success are showcased in the Open University in Scotland’s recently released Annual Review 2022.

View our year in spotlight, from ranking joint first in Scotland in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction, to our Mock COP held with partners for Highlands school pupils, and helping businesses across Scotland to adapt and bounce-back from the Covid-19 pandemic thanks to funded upskilling and reskilling opportunities.

Two-thirds of Scotland's SMEs report skills shortages

Two-thirds of Scotland's small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) managers and owners - those with fewer than 250 employees - have reported that skills shortages are impacting their business growth and profitability, according to new research conducted for the OU.

Edinburgh International Book Festival

We are delighted to be supporting events with Greta Thunberg, Damian Barr, and Judy Murray, at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August. 

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg will be talking about her new release The Climate Book. Scottish author and broadcaster Damian Barr will host an evening of lively discussion, readings and performance celebrating writing and storytelling. OU honorary graduate and tennis coach Judy Murray will share her debut novel, The Wild Card.

The Open University in Scotland supports the Edinburgh International Book Festival as part of our cultural engagement activity across Scotland.

Art and science meet at Summer Solstice Week

This week Crawick Multiverse - a spectacular artland in Dumfries and Galloway inspired by the science and mysteries of the cosmos - is hosting a range of public family-friendly summer solstice celebrations.

The series of inspirational, educational and entertaining activities for all ages is co-hosted by The Open University and running until Saturday 24 June. 

Glasgow Science Festival brought to you by OU

Glasgow Science Festival's Science on the sofa programme is online until Friday 30 June. Enjoy a huge range of activities, experiments and more, all from the comfort of your own sofa!

We have contributed content to the programme, as well as hosting events at the in-person festival, which ran from 1-11 June. This included a talk at a giant earth artwork and interactive activities.

Fadzai Mwakutuya and Humza Yousaf

Highland artist wins Learner of the Year Award

One of Scotland’s leading artists has been recognised for her contribution to union learning. Fadzai Mwakutuya, a visual artist based on the remote peninsula of Scoraig, was presented the Scottish Union Learning Learner of the Year Award from First Minister Humza Yousaf, at the annual meeting of the Scottish Trades Union Congress in April.

The Open University in Scotland was pleased to support this award. We work closely with Scottish Union Learning, enabling union members across Scotland to access development opportunities.
