Back in January, via our MP Adam Holloway, I wrote and invited his chum, The Financial Secretary to The Treasury, Nigel Huddleston (pictured), along with his American wife and children, to join us at Bartellas as my guests so that he could witness first hand the vital importance of neighbourhood restaurants - he’s yet to respond.
The Treasury’s reasoning behind the giant supermarkets being allowed to sell food at 0% VAT is that what they offer is considered “essential”! Well so are real neighbourhood restaurants who have played and continue to play such a major part in fostering community life whilst barely breaking even, as unpaid tax collectors. A 5% VAT rate instead of our current 20% is long overdue. Let’s see on 6th March budget whether his boss, Jeremy Hunt, might have taken note but I somehow doubt it either.
Meanwhile, we have to crack on but with your continued loyal support we will overcome any of their latest obstacles thrown or left in our way.
Look forward to seeing you all very soon.
As ever,
Ian
