Hi, gorgeous!

Hello from Miami Beach, where I have so far managed to escape any sign of fall. I will be back in NYC soon to kick off book events, woo hoo! I will send more details when I have them, for those of you who are in the city and might like to hang out.

BTW, it was brought to my attention that last week when I meant to call myself a pedant, I called myself a pendant. Lol! It's hard to be your own editor. πŸ˜…

Okay here are your five things for the week. β¬

    PRACTICE TIP
    1. unplug πŸ”Œ

I challenge you this week to take your news consumption down a notch... just one little notch. In these truly chaotic times, it's so easy to fall into addictive behaviour with the news, and that can be so tough on our mental health.

Here are some ways you could take it down a notch:

    • Turn off news notifications on your phone
    • Unfollow news outlets on social media
    • Unsubscribe from news digest emails
    • Check the news on your computer only, not your phone (I started implementing this one this week)
    • Choose one day a week to have a news cleanse

I know I've mentioned this one recently, but it feels vital, so I am bringing it up again. It's okay to take a break. It's okay to unplug. It's not a moral imperative to stay up on the news–take care of your mental health first. πŸ’“

    2. trendy jackfruit, the privilege of productivity hacks, and why "likes" maybe aren't so nice

Please, join me in obsessing over this 96-year-old woman who is responsible for most of the produce trends of the last 50 years: storyteller extraordinaire, Frieda Kaplan. If you're an American who loves kiwi, jackfruit, or jicama, you have this 96-year old woman to thank | Washington Post

Most productivity hacks and advice are for people who have privilege. It's so true, and it really steams me. But this is a great, necessary article about hacking productivity when you contend with micro-aggressions everyday: Productivity Without Privilege | NYT

This is well worth the read: how social networks accidentally inspire negativity by making it easy to be positive. (Seems backwards, but read it and prepare to say "Ohhhhhh.") A Like Can't Go Anywhere, But a Compliment Can Go a Long Way | Frank Chimero

    3. electric spider-ooh

The earth's atmosphere is a giant electrical circuit (the upper atmosphere is positively charged and the planet / ground are negatively charged.)

For ages, people (including Darwin) have been like, yo, how did all these spiders end up on my ship so far away from shore? (Or, how did they end up 1,000 miles out at sea, or 2.5 miles up in the air?!) And because we like to just assign answers to hard questions, everyone was all, "It must be the wind!" even though it only seemed to happen on un-windy days.

Anyhoo, cut to now and as it turns out, scientists proved that spiders are riding the earth's electrical current to get around. So. βš‘πŸ•·οΈ

    SELF LOVE PRACTICE
    4. note to self πŸ’Œ

One of the practices in my book (out in 18 days, woo hoo!) is something called "Note to Self."

It's simple: write yourself a formal letter, on paper, listing the things you love about yourself. Then mail it.

Simple, but not easy! A lot of us can list a thousand things we'd like to "improve" about ourselves, but struggle to list even a few things we love about ourselves. This is a great practice to break that barrier down! It's just between you and you.

(I also do this one in my self-love workshops, but then I mail it to people a couple of months down the road, along with a note from me. It's a pretty powerful practice.)

    5. r u on TikTok?

Hey, are you on TikTok? If so, I want to follow you there! Reply with your handle, or you can follow me and I'll follow you back: @liza.kin.

(Don't expect too much from me, I'm just an oldie always trying to figure out what the kids are up to. ;)

How are you feeling these days? I hope you are taking good care of yourself. It can feel like such a hard thing to prioritize, but nothing could be more important. We need to care for ourselves so we can care for other people, amirite? Easier said than done, I know. Hope you have a beautiful weekend! See you next week. x
