Presidential ponderings

I hope you've all enjoyed a restful Christmas holiday with friends and family and are looking forward to a New Year that includes a resolution to spend more time on the bike as we a new year and a new decade - a year that promises so much for fans and participants of our sport.

It was a shame that our winter time trial series coincided with one of the wettest autumns we've experienced which resulted in more cancellations than actual races and so we decided to put it on hold to focus on the upcoming sprint/summer season of events. A lot of planning is going in to these and the provisional calendar can be viewed by following the link below. As well as our weekly club TTs we will also be running two Open races again and our annual Road Race.

Club rides have encountered some challenging conditions over the last few weeks and not just due to the weather, the onboard cameras have picked up some fairly shocking examples of poor driving which have been passed to the relevant police authorities in the hope an increase in driver awareness results in a safer road environment for all of us.

I'll conclude by wishing you all a prosperous, healthy and rewarding New Year for both you and your families and hope to see more club members out on the roads soon.

Paul

Hardriders TT Sunday 1st March

The club's racing season starts in just 8 weeks time on 1st March with our annual Hardriders 23 mile event, posing a real test of a rider’s winter training efforts. Starting at Wroxton, competitors head north west, descending the notorious Sunrising Hill to Ettington where they then turn around to retrace the route to HQ, climbing back up the hill which is 17% at it’s steepest. The winner is presented with the Broughton Cup.

Current holder of the trophy is Jack O'Neil, who also won in 2017 (pictured above), when he set the course record of 51.38.

Entry can now be made via the link to the CTT website below which closes on 18th February.

Looking back at our Awards Dinner

The club's 2019 season was celebrated in fine style with a great evening at Hook Norton Brewery. Special thanks must of course go to Ila Pearson for her great organisation and promotion of the event, which was in the end oversubscribed. We should also not forget the work put in by our President, Paul Dean, who not only gathered in all the trophies, but labelled and even cleaned them all. A nice touch was also the 450 photos he'd collated which were shown continually during the evening on the big TV.

It was also great to have Charlie Quarterman as our special guest and to hear about his progress from a keen youngster to a recently signed World Tour Team rider.

We also shouldn't forget our youngest award winner, Isabella Boyles, who was not there to accept the Bolland "Rising Star" Trophy and is pictured below.

2020 TT Review

The 2020 time trial calendar is now live on the website. We've taken the opportunity to make a couple of tweaks based on a review of 2019s events. The major change is a move to July for the K4/10C "Chippy Ten". Running it later in the season will give us a lighter evening and hopefully less traffic as it will be the school holidays. In addition all of the roadworks between Bloxham and Chipping Norton should be complete by then (famous last words) so further improving cycling safety.

We're awaiting final confirmation from the relevant police authorities but don't envisage any changes from the proposed dates/courses.

In the coming weeks we'll populate the marshal/pusher/timekeeper roster with plenty of notice given.

Henry Boyles - CX Star of the future

It's late November and cold, with a white frost on the ground, but in shorts, young Henry Boyles is loving his cyclo-cross. On this occasion he finished on the podium in 3rd place in the under 8s race. Respect.

Stars take to the track this month

Twenty club members will take to the track this month with a visit to Derby Velodrome on 10th, for a 2 hour session.

Details of the velodrome can be found via the link below, which includes full address and directions.

Dave Pittman will post any updates on Facebook, so please keep an eye open.

Derby Velodrome details

Race Secretary Mark Boyles has been busy over the Christmas period uploading local open TT events, road races and crits in the area for next year - this includes, the distance, course code and the various links to register.

The date for our own annual road race has now been confirmed for Sunday 31st May. During recent years this event has coincided with the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, but this year it's now the following weekend.

So, with Christmas now behind us, what are you waiting for, let's get out training for the new season ahead.

Bike camera news

Last month we announced that all ride leaders would be supplied with Cycliq Fly front and rear cameras for our club rides and it didn't take long for issues to start being captured including this one below who was reported to Northants Police for close passing our group and scaring the life out of the oncoming cyclist. The observant will note the green ribbon on the rear wiper of the car which is there to remember Harry Dunn who was killed at Croughton by a car being driven on the wrong side of the road.

Club riding kit

Full details of club kit are on the club website, but remember if at any time we get 5 orders for any one garment, regardless of size, or men's or women's fit, an order can be opened placed with Endura.

In the meantime, below is a list of club jerseys which Dave Speck currently holds in stock:

Ladies Short sleeve jersey - Small
Men’s Short sleeve jersey - Large
Men’s short Sleeve jerseys - Medium

Mudguards and ride etiquette

We've had some very wet and muddy rides recently, really backing up our decision for the compulsory fitting of mudguards on winter club rides. Thank you all for complying.

For new members in particular, don't forget to read the club's own riding etiquette booklet via the link below.

Following regular appeals, we really do still need more volunteers for ride leaders, so please contact John Tustian for further details
