This summer, Ella Noonan, a senior majoring in Marketing interned with TJX on the Bedding and Decorative Textiles team at TJ Maxx. Applying the skills she gained in the classroom, Noonan worked on analyzing sales, inventory levels, and allocation strategies, while also conducting market research and competitive analysis. But for Ella, the greatest takeaway wasn’t just the work- it was people.
“The highlight of my experience was the people I met this summer,” she shares, “Additionally, my team made my experience incredibly special as they were amazing female mentors. The culture at TJX is truly one of a kind and I felt so welcome and part of the team!”
Ella emphasizes the value of making connections during an internship: “One valuable skill I learned is how important it is to get to know the people that you work with! I did several coffee chats with members of my team, department, and people who worked in areas I was interested in. This was extremely helpful as I was able to learn more about the company culture and various careers!”
Internships provide more than just professional skills. They offer a firsthand look into the corporate world and help students shape their career goals. “Through my internship, I met so many people in different fields of work and was able to learn more about what I would like my career path to look like” Ella said.
She also credits University of Connecticut with helping her prepare for the experience as she found her summer internship through UConn's Career Expo and got to meet the Campus Recruiting Team from TJX. The help she received from her marketing professors with resumes and networking gave her a leg up in preparing for her internship.
Ella’s advice to fellow students? “...connect with people who work at companies [you] would like to work at. Finding something in common such as a hometown or college can help make an easy conversation introduction that could lead to gaining a mentor and professional help!”
