A wise friend and painter once described the weather in Provence as wild and untamed. He was right! Autumn can arrive with little warning. One day you are enjoying lunch on a sunny terrace enjoying the warmth, and the next day you are bracing against a bitter mistral wind.
Fog often shrouds the mornings, and smoky bonfires are lit, taking advantage of the cooler weather. Shortly after the grape harvest, the vines turn shades of yellow and red. Plane trees (Platanes) drop crunchy brown leaves, a sad reminder of the dappled summer shade they once provided.
On the Côte d’Azur, the fall season is another story. The hordes of tourists have diminished, yet the daytime temperatures are pleasant, and the skies remain cobalt blue. Although October may not be prime weather for spending the day on a beach, activities like hiking, cycling and exploring await. The article on the Pays de Fayence provides a bit of temptation.
