May Newsletter

Dear ,

We hope you are doing well. In the same breath, we want to acknowledge that we have no real understanding of how the pandemic may be affecting you. So, please accept our wishes for your health and the health of your loved ones.

As a customer of ours, we want you to know that we are ready to serve you, whenever you are ready. If you need us now, we are ready. If you need us in the future, we will be ready. And if you need us in an entirely new way, we will do everything we can to get ready.

Please let us know if there is a new or better way we can serve you (but don’t feel any obligation to respond). What matters most is that you simply know we are wishing you well.

We have been making a lot of changes already in response to COVID-19:

  • We have launched a Patreon membership program to provide value to book addicts wherever you may live. For $12/month you receive access to a virtual author event each month. Join by 5/5 to get access to Brad Meltzer's on 5/6! Please help us spread the word by sharing with your book-loving friends around the world.
  • We have moved our store 3 doors down in the same shopping center to Suite 2 (closer to Jimmy John's) and look forward to showing you our new space when you feel comfortable shopping with us again in person.
  • Even as the economy starts to open back up, we think it will be quite a while before author tours will get back to normal, so we are going all-in on virtual author events. For our non-Patreon members, we are offering different weekly individually ticketed events.
  • We are still offering curbside pickup for prepaid orders. To pay, order online or call in a credit card number to us and then call again when you pull into the parking lot so we can put your order on our outside table.
  • We will be closing the store at 5pm on Thursday, May 7th in order to host the Charles Martin virtual event from the store. Grab your tickets while you still can!

Murphy Shepherd is a retired priest, living alone on an island, and tending the grounds for a church with no parishioners. But when his best friend dies and asks that Murph scatter his ashes at the end of the world, Murph lashes the ashes to the front of his boat and heads south down the Intracoastal waterway.

Along the way, his path intersects with a dance instructor named Summer who is searching for her daughter. It doesn't take Murph long to realize that Summer's search is even more dire than they knew, and that her daughter has been abducted into the world of trafficking.

Camino Winds by John Grisham

Welcome back to Camino Island, where anything can happen—even a murder in the midst of a hurricane, which might prove to be the perfect crime . . .

Just as Bruce Cable’s Bay Books is preparing for the return of bestselling author Mercer Mann, Hurricane Leo veers from its predicted course and heads straight for the island. Florida’s governor orders a mandatory evacuation, and most residents board up their houses and flee to the mainland, but Bruce decides to stay and ride out the storm.

The hurricane is devastating: homes and condos are leveled, hotels and storefronts ruined, streets flooded, and a dozen people lose their lives. One of the apparent victims is Nelson Kerr, a friend of Bruce’s and an author of thrillers. But the nature of Nelson’s injuries suggests that the storm wasn’t the cause of his death: He has suffered several suspicious blows to the head.

Who would want Nelson dead? The local police are overwhelmed in the aftermath of the storm and ill equipped to handle the case. Bruce begins to wonder if the shady characters in Nelson’s novels might be more real than fictional. And somewhere on Nelson’s computer is the manuscript of his new novel. Could the key to the case be right there—in black and white? As Bruce starts to investigate, what he discovers between the lines is more shocking than any of Nelson’s plot twists—and far more dangerous.

Queen Bee by Dorothea Benton Frank

*Queen Bee was the author's final novel

Beekeeper Holly McNee Jensen quietly lives in a world of her own on Sullivans Island, tending her hives and working at the local island library. Holly calls her mother The Queen Bee because she’s a demanding hulk of a woman. Her mother, a devoted hypochondriac, might be unaware that she’s quite ill but that doesn’t stop her from tormenting Holly. To escape the drama, Holly’s sister Leslie married and moved away, wanting little to do with island life. Holly’s escape is to submerge herself in the lives of the two young boys next door and their widowed father, Archie.

Her world is upended when the more flamboyant Leslie returns and both sisters, polar opposites, fixate on what’s happening in their neighbor’s home. Is Archie really in love with that awful ice queen of a woman? If Archie marries her, what will become of his little boys? Restless Leslie is desperate for validation after her imploded marriage, squandering her favors on any and all takers. Their mother ups her game in an uproarious and theatrical downward spiral. Scandalized Holly is talking to her honey bees a mile a minute, as though they’ll give her a solution to all the chaos. Maybe they will.

Queen Bee is a classic Lowcountry Tale—warm, wise and hilarious, it roars with humanity and a dropperful of whodunit added for good measure by an unseen hand. In her twentieth novel, Dorothea Benton Frank brings us back to her beloved island with an unforgettable story where the Lowcountry magic of the natural world collides with the beat of the human heart.

The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna by Juliet Grames

I can’t wait to hear the book club discussions generated by The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna. The Last Blue by Isla Morley

The writing in The Last Blue is lyrical and the story is mesmerizing. Knowing that the Blue People of Kentucky really existed made me feel like I was truly experiencing history. It is a story of bullying and prejudice – different is different - and people reacted much the same back then as they do today. But more importantly it is a story of family, of sacrifice, of doing the right thing, and one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. There is also murder and attempted murder. However, because of the skillful way the story is told jumping back and forth from 1937 to 1972 you will be kept in suspense until the very end about what all happened in Chance, KY in 1937. I highly recommend this for book clubs – the discussions will be endless.

I Know Who You Are by Alice Feeney

Aimee Sinclair was taught at an early age to become a good actor. As a child being a good actor meant surviving and pleasing her Mum, as an adult it meant having a career and fooling her husband so he wouldn’t hurt her too much. We meet Aimee Sinclair when she arrives home from a day on set of her newest film and finds that her husband has disappeared. Aimee has spent so many years – from the time she was 6 - pretending to be someone else and trying to forget the truly horrible things that have happened to her that she begins to believe maybe she did something to hurt her husband, because after all he deserved it. Alice Feeny certainly didn’t suffer from sophomore slump when she wrote I Know Who You Are. It is a psychological thriller that takes a stunning look at how tragic events affect people, especially children, and how the mind adapts in different ways in order to survive. You may think you know what is happening and why but don’t bet on it.

What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera

When Arthur goes to New York for the summer, he expects it to be a lot like the Broadway plays he adores. But it's not. Ben, on the other hand, is much more pragmatic, in that native New Yorker way. When they meet, Arthur falls head over heels almost immediately, and his enthusiasm may rub off a bit on Ben...but things don't exactly work out in real life the way they do on stage. With alternating chapters from Arthur's and Ben's points of view, this is another wonderful read from Albertalli and Silvera, and fans of both authors won't be disappointed (and fans of musical theater will love it even more).

OK, disclaimer: I'm a 'Reacherholic.' And for those who share my obsession with the Reacher series, this one will not disappoint. It has all of the standard elements: the good guys in need of help, the bad guys, the really bad guys, and the really really bad guys, not to mention the femme fatale. But Reacher fans, you need to read this one and let me know if I am reading something into it that isn't there. Reacher isn't himself. This is a darker Jack Reacher; a more brooding, more violent, more intense Reacher than we have seen before. Maybe all this time on the road is changing him, and it may not be for the better. I'm worried about Jack Reacher!
