Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Why Do You Worry?”
Aim: Contrast
Jesus’
teachings about worry with our own anxieties,
Appreciate
God’s
care for everything in nature, and Embrace
the
opportunity to trust God in everyday life.
Background: Matthew
6:19-34
Bible Lesson:
Matthew
6:25-34
Memory
Verses:
(For
after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly
Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye
first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things
shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:32-33 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The
Gospel according to Matthew was authored, under the inspiration of
God, by Matthew one of the 12 disciples selected by Jesus. The
passages of scripture found in Chapters 5-7 are called the Sermon on
the Mount. The setting for these teachings by Jesus was a scenic
mountainside. Thusly, in this lesson Matthew records Jesus’
teachings.
-
Chapter
6 begins with the description of the Spirit of Giving to the Needy
(verses 1-4), Proper Attitude of Prayer including the Model Prayer
(verses 5-14), Proper Attitude of Fasting (verses 16-18), Priority
of What is Valuable (verses 19-24).
-
We
then come to our Study … Dealing with Anxiety (verses 25-34) (Some
other companion passages are Luke 12:22-31; Philippians 4:6; 1 Peter
5:7)
-
The
teaching of Jesus begins with addressing Worries about basic daily
necessities and moves on to the much larger matter of the Future,
which includes everything!
-
Even
though food and water are necessities for life, Jesus is telling us
not to be overly concerned about them. Yes, we should work, plan,
and make good decisions, but don’t be obsessed about our daily
needs. Since God provides our very lives and the strength to work
and the mental capacity to reason and think, can we not trust Him to
provide these necessities?
-
Jesus
asks a rhetorical question “Is not life more than food, and the
body more than clothes?” The obvious answer is a resounding Yes!
Then Jesus directs his hearers to observe the birds that were
probably flying overhead or who are darting about in the grass.
When did the birds plant seed, reap a harvest or store provisions
for the future in barns? Never; however, God provides food for their
existence for Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
-
Jesus
asks a second rhetorical question “Are you not much more valuable
than they (birds)?” Certainly, we are more valuable. We are
created in the image of God and created to be a little lower than
the angels. The logical conclusion that one must drawn is that if
God takes care of the birds of the air, He is very capable of
providing our necessities.
-
Next,
Jesus makes it clear that worrying does not change a situation. It
does not produce food, water, or clothing and neither will it
increase your life span. On the contrary, worrying can shorten your
life by producing deadly stress which can kill or lead you to
hopelessness which can result in self-destruction.
-
Jesus
now returns to worries regarding what we will wear. Again, he
directs their attention to their surroundings to the beautiful wild
flowers growing across the landscape in the fields. Painters and
artists over the years have attempted to capture such beauty.
Clothes designers have sought to make patterns in fabric to rival
the enumerable natural colors and shades of colors visible naturally
in God’s creations. The flowers do not work or spin to create
their beauty. Jesus uses something familiar to his hearers, the
royal and luxurious splendor of King Solomon, who was the richest
and wisest king of their time, to make the point. Not even his
finest attire could not match the beauty of the flowers of the
fields.
-
The
lives of flowers are generally short. They bloom, blossom and
provide beauty only temporarily. Eventually, they will wither and
die. During that time, plants were used as fuel for fires;
therefore, the once beautiful flowers would eventually serve as a
source of heat for cooking food or heat for warmth.
-
If
God provides such beauty for flowers, why wouldn’t we expect God
to provide clothing to cover the bodies of those who are created in
His own image. Jesus asks his hearers where was their faith in God,
especially in light of what could seen in God’s care for His
creation.
-
Jesus uses the term Gentiles or
pagans in His teachings to represent those who do not have believe
in God and does not have a relationship with God. He explains that
without the Heavenly Father, they are consumed with scraping and
scratching for the necessities of life. They are yet to realize
that God can and will take care of them. The bottomline for
Christians is that God who is our Creator knows what His
Creation needs and He is more than capable of providing everything
needed.
-
The
conjunction “But” introduces an alternative. Instead
of worrying about food, drink, and clothes, our energies would be
better spent diligently seeking
how
to be positioned
within the Control and Will of God. With this pursuit, we would
discover that our necessities will be provided. It is clear that the
top priority of mankind is to seek a relationship with God and to
serve Him.
-
Finally, Jesus moves to the
worries about the future. He commands them to not worry about it
either. Tomorrow brings its own concerns and there is no need of
pulling them into today. It should be abundantly clear that if God
can provide for all of our necessities for today, then why not work,
pray, and trust Him for all of our tomorrows. Remember He even
knows how many tomorrows that have been allotted to each of us.
Take
Aways:
-
We
can trust God for our daily necessities because He is our Creator
and He knows better what we need than we ourselves.
-
We
can survey nature and recognize that our God is amazing and that His
Loving Care is on full display for all to see.
-
We
have no need to worry about the Future because we know our Heavenly
Father holds it.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon
and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that
you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? 5 You
have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned
them with glory and honor.” Psalms 8:3-5 NIV
“Give us today our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11 NIV
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by
prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to
God.” Philippians 4:6 NIV
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter
5:7 NIV
“Because
of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions
never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your
faithfulness.” Lamentation 3:22-23 NIV

369 New COVID-19 Cases & 5 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
June 5, 2021
(15 New Cases in Fayette County)
As millions receive the COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people continues as a high priority for the Biden Administration with July 4th as a milestone objective for families whose members have been fully vaccinated to have small celebration gatherings. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
