The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) have been informed by the Company Security Officer (CSO) of the Liberian-flagged, Greek managed, Container Ship GROTON (IMO: 9246310) that the vessel was attacked approximately 130NM East of Aden, Yemen.
Initial reports indicated that at 17:00 UTC, a missile splashed in the water 50 meters from the vessel's bow. A second attack was reported at 18:30 UTC, with a missile splashing near the vessel's stern, though only the noise was heard as the vessel was sailing in darkness.
The GROTON came under attack 3 August, 2024 as well in a similar assault off Aden that included two missiles fired at the vessel, with one causing minor damage.
The vessel reportedly was not hit or sustained any damage. The vessel and crew were reported safe and proceeded to the next port of call. Authorities are currently investigating.
All vessels in the area are advised to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activities to the UKMTO.
