The Research Software Funders Forum – a collaboration of funding organisations committed to supporting research software, and those who develop it, as fundamental and vital to research – meets monthly to share practices and consider how to address common challenges. The Funders Forum is convened by ReSA and supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Since its inception in January 2022, approximately 45 individuals from 30 organisations have attended Funders Forum meetings. The types of organisations represented include 70% government/government-funded; 19% philanthropy; and 11% industry. Regions represented include Australasia (Australia, Japan); Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom); North America (Canada, USA); and South America (Brazil). The Funders Forum aims to increase the participation of organisations from the Global South.
The Funders Forum has explored a variety of discussion topics and funder practices including funding research software; the research software people landscape; how to collaborate informally; open source program offices (OSPOs); and FAIR Principles for Research Software (FAIR4RS). Speakers from 10 organisations have provided 5-minute talks on their research software funding strategy. The Funders Forum has two active working groups, with secretariat support from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada: (1) a multilateral funding call for research software and (2) coordinated funder implementation of FAIR for research software principles.
Many thanks to the research software funding community for its participation and support of the forum. If you’re a funder interested in joining the Research Software Funders Forum, please contact ReSA. For further information, please refer to the Funders Forum Terms of Reference.
