Tales from the High Stool - 9pm.
Pádraig Ó Cuinn hosts this program on 2RRR with interviews with people involved in local & global music. Guests are invited into a virtual 'pub' to sit on 'The High Stool', & discuss music, musical influences, & whatever they like, with their virtual 'bar-person'.
This week his guest is John Schumann of The Vagabond crew and formerly Redgum.
In part 1 of this interview, we discuss how Redgum were formed as part of a university assignment at Flinders University and what motivated John to begin writing songs and how most of their “assignment” ended up on the first Redgum album, “If you don’t fight you lose” From then on, Redgum became synonymous on the Australian folk and music scene for political activism and the fire in John's activism has never waned! To be expected as all the original members of Redgum had been students at Flinders University and together developed a strong political voice. They are best known for their protest song exploring the impact of war in the 1980s "I was only 19”, which peaked at No. 1 on the Australian charts and it is in the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) list of Top 30 of All time best Australian Songs created in 2001.
From 2005, John Schumann has performed with his band John Schumann and the Vagabond Crew.
Streaming live on 2RRR (88.5MHz FM). Podcasts online after each show. Send suggestions for music, suitable guest etc. to Patrick.
