"I need more ideas on how to make Justin think I'm living the dream," I said to my best friend Emerson. "Do you have any ideas I can borrow?"
She looked thoughtful for a moment, and then her eyes lit up. "I have the best idea."
I sat up straighter. "What is it?"
"How do you feel about fake relationships?"
I furrowed my brow. "What do you mean?"
"Well, since it doesn't sound like Justin knows that you're single at the moment, and dating someone amazing is usually the best way to get revenge on a past crush, I was thinking you could get all dressed up before you come to my house tonight and make him think you're going out on a hot date instead."
"You want me to pretend like I'm going on a date with you?"
"No, silly," she said. "I was saying you could pretend like you're going to meet some super hot guy you've been seeing lately, and then just come over to my house instead."
"You think he'd buy something like that?"
"Of course," she said. "People do things like that in the movies all the time. And it's not like he's going to follow you, right? Just put on your amazing black dress and make sure to make your exit when Justin is downstairs to see you leave."
I thought about it for a second. "You think that would work?"
"Yes! At least, that's what I'm planning to do one of these days."
It would be nice to at least pretend like I was super sought after by hot, successful men. And Justin was only going to be here for a week, so it's not like I'd have to keep up the charade for that long.
In fact, maybe I could plan a date with a different imaginary guy each night. Then Justin could think I had just as many guys vying for my attention as he had women.
"So what do you think?" Emerson asked, her face filled with anticipation.
A slow smile spread across my lips. "I think you're a genius!"
