The Master of a Marshall Islands-flagged Tanker reported an approach by five small craft while underway near Point Alpha of the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) in the Gulf of Aden.
Each craft had up to five persons onboard and was detected on radar. Three craft were positioned on the port beam, one on the port bow, and one at the aft. The craft followed the vessel for approximately 30 minutes, with two coming within less than 3NM. The crew mustered, and the onboard armed security team displayed their weapons, prompting the craft to depart the area.
No weapons or ladders were observed on the small craft, which was noted to be displaying black flags. This is the second such approach reported in this area within 48 hours. The vessel is reportedly continuing to its next port of call.
All vessels in the area are advised to proceed cautiously and report any suspicious activities to the UKMTO.
