TALK - ROCK KAPAK in the 1980s & 1990s, Online, Wednesday 30th June 5pm

Dr Adil Johan Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer Institute for Ethnic Studies Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia introduces the history of Rock Kapak (axe rock), and the Malaysian rock group Search, who were a popular culture phenomenon across the Malay-speaking region. He offer an analysis of youth culture and popular music that circulated across the region, driven by common expressions of sentimentality and narrations about the social anxieties present in a period of rapid economic development during the 1980s and 1990s. TALK - A LEVELS VS IB, Online, Thursday 1st July 11.45am

The speakers for this talk on the difference between A Levels and the IB and how A levels can prepare chidren for university will be Mrs Hawtree (Principal of POWIIS), Mrs Clarke (Deputy Principal of Curriculum) and Mr Hewitt (Head of Sixth Form) who have experience in teaching both curriculums. TALK - FORTRESS PENANG, Online, Thursday 1st July 3pm-4pm

Meet KL-based author Andrew Barber for the launch of his new novel. "Fortress Penang" was the designation given to the island by British military planners prior to the Second World War. It was to prove deeply ironic, as the story of the disastrous British withdrawal and the subsequent Japanese occupation were to prove.
Andrew's novel will be sent as an e-book to those who register for the talk. Set in pre-war and war-time Penang, it tracks the challenges and struggles of Tom Baxter, a British MI6 officer, who is faced with a host of personal and professional challenges as the British strategic and military position crumbles in front of him. penangpac welcomes everyone - newbies, aspiring artists, anyone with talent or those who've lost a bet and end up having to make a fool out of themselves. THE ILHAM ART SHOW 2022 - CALL FOR ENTRIES, Online, Until Friday 2nd July

The ILHAM Art Show is a triennial exhibition platform to give artists the opportunity to experiment and make new work, and to support and promote contemporary art in Malaysia. Those selected to participate in the ILHAM Art Show will be awarded an art production grant (between RM2,000 – RM8,000) to be put towards the making of their new work.

In a country where possession of cannabis is punishable with death, Siti finds herself pulled into the unfamiliar world of lengthy legal proceeding and prison visits when her 60 year old father is arrested for using medical cannabis to treat his chronic illnesses. In her journey to save her father from the death penalty, Siti finds herself succumbing to fear and anxiety as she navigates through her own personal challenges - all the while fearing that she might never see her father again. All in all, ‘Ayahku, Dr.G’ is a story about a daughter’s quest for her father’s justice from a law that puts punishment before public health.

See the world through the eyes of a blind woman, take a walk in the shoes of a wheelchair user, and learn how disability brings new perspectives to artmaking in “Perspectives”, a disability-led film directed by Peggy Ferroa and Michael Chua. Part documentary, part theatrical monologue, “Perspectives” is an independent project which explores the lives of Singaporeans with disabilities, told through music, monologues and works of art. G-Short is a short film festival held as part of the George Town Festival 2021 to celebrate the endless imagination and possibilities a 90-second short film can bring about. Themed “Reimagine: A New Way of Seeing”, with the tagline “Short Yet Powerful”, G-Short was conceived to encourage the local and international film communities to create short-form and original films, unleashing their creativity, originality and innovation to tell stories in new ways – all while strengthening the branding of the George Town Festival. CHILDREN’S THEATRE - ONCE UPON A TIME, Online, Until Wednesday 14th July

The Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac) presents the first installment of a 5 part production of Malaysian Folklore, Legends and Tales series in 2021 called "Once Upon a Time..." In part 1, Badang The Magnificent is a story about a slave who wished for superhuman strength after meeting a mystical creature. KECIK-KECIK GROUP SHOW 2021, Online, Until August 31st

Kecik-Kecik Group Show returns for its 2021 edition with over 50 participating artists!

Penang Art District once again collaborates with Hin Bus Depot to bring Malaysian contemporary art to a wider audience by introducing a wide variety of affordable contemporary pieces to grow a strong culture of collecting Malaysian art.

In light of the periodic Movement Control Order, this year, Kecik-Kecik will be conducted online for accessibility while keeping it safe for all artists and collectors.
