Insights from the Pan-Baltic Macro Overview

On May 28th over 90 participants joined the webinar with economists Dainis Gašpuitis at SEB Latvia, Tadas Povilauskas at SEB Lithuania and Mihkel Nestor at SEB Estonia, organized in cooperation with the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Latvia and Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Estonia and moderated by Morten Hansen, Head of Economics Department at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. According to the experts, the crisis comes „at the right time“ – the Baltic countries are much better prepared to deal with economic shocks compared to the recent financial crisis. Looking ahead, it is crucial not to use all the available means, but to save some „firepower“ for a possible second wave of pandemics. The EU funds provide significant support to the Baltic economies – the challenge is to use them wisely and invest in such sectors as IT, shared-services and green energy. The crisis also brings new opportunities to the Baltics – European companies might start diversifying and shortening their supply chains, so our manufacturing industries should be proactive and prepare to stand out. If a U-shaped recovery trend continues, a new wave of emigration can be prevented and GDP is expected to return to pre-crisis levels in 2022.

Takeaways from the discussion on business disruptions & opportunities

On June 3rd the SCCL hosted a webinar on business disruptions and opportunities in the Swedish-Lithuanian business context. Although Sweden has taken a different stand in the Corona crisis and allowed businesses
to remain open, many companies are working at a slower pace
due to sick leaves and part-time solutions. The entire ecosystem of manufacturing subcontracting is facing a number of risks, including cash flow disruptions. Therefore the importance of focusing on securing payments and including such details as time and volume commitments into business agreements is stronger than ever. 43% of Swedish companies are reviewing their supply chains. This could be a good chance for Lithuanian suppliers to accommodate the demand for reducing supply chain risks and to offer improved supply chain solutions through nearshoring. For this purpose, the efforts of improving the image of Lithuania in Sweden should not be underestimated. Situation in the Swedish labor market

On June 3rd, Managing Director of SCCL Jone Sestakauskaite took part in a virtual Uppsala breakfast, organized by the Chamber of Commerce in Uppsala County for discussing the situation in the labor market. The unemployment rate in Sweden is getting close to 10%. According to the experts, it is important to take early measures in order to avoid creating "a lock-down" generation and to make sure that newly unemployed are kept active and can re-enter the labor market as soon as the crisis turns. The construction sector has not yet been much affected by the crisis, but an increase of temporary lay-offs is expected in the autumn.
